With your car rental in Haiti you have access to large road network connecting all of the major towns and cities. Route 1 runs from Port-au-Prince to Cap Haitien along the coast, while Route 3 runs between the same destinations through the middle of the country. Roads are generally poorly maintained and off the main routes there are many small tracks that can be hazardous.

Tips for safer driving in Haiti

  • Exercise extreme caution, many other drivers are not aware of local driving laws
  • Drive on the right-hand side of the road but be aware many drivers cross into the opposite side of the road to avoid potholes and debris
  • Drink driving in Haiti is illegal, but as many drivers do drink and drive be especially cautious at night and at festival times
  • Plan before you travel, consult security advise in specific areas and check for road closures and adverse weather conditions
