The main problems you may face with other drivers are speeding and tailgating as well as congestion in larger cities such as Kuala Lumpur. The expressways are generally toll roads and many people avoid them on their daily commute. However, these routes are often faster and congestion-free.

Here are some more tips for driving in Malaysia

  • Keep an eye out for animals on the road as well as pedestrians.
  • Be aware that there are many people riding motorbikes - a common mode of transportation in Malaysia.
  • Don’t be alarmed by al of the horns honking; sounding your horn when overtaking is a common practice.
  • Seatbelts are required for all drivers and passengers.

General speed limits in Malaysia

  • The maximum speed limit on expressways is 110 km/h (68 mph).
  • Federal and state roads are generally 90 km/h (56 mph).

Top 4 Architectural Sights

Malaysia’s diverse religions, culture, and history are reflected in the breadth of its architectural styles. The Petronas Towers are the tallest twin towers in the world and dominate the skyline of Kuala Lumpur. They are connected by the Skybridge and are striking at night. You can also purchase tickets to take in the phenomenal views. Another major feature of the Kuala Lumpur skyline is the Kuala Lumpur Tower - the 7th tallest in the world - that features an observatory and revolving restaurant. The Sultan Abdul Samad Building was originally built for the government offices of the British colonial administration. It was completed in 1897, renamed in 1974, and served as a backdrop to important national events. We highly recommend a visit to Penang for stunning examples of Chinese architecture in Malaysia and the Khoo Kongsi is one of the most impressive and ornamental. The historic building is situated in the charming George Town area of the city.

Top 4 Natural Sights

The Batu Caves are a series of limestone caves housing temples in Gombak. An impressive 140-foot-tall Hindu deity stands at the foot of the steps leading up to the huge Temple Cave that is adorned with ornate shrines. The Taman Negara National Park has become a renowned eco-tourism destination and contains some of the oldest rainforests in the world. Some of the main activities are jungle trekking and bird watching while visitors can also enjoy an impressive canopy walkway and natural wonders such as the Gua Telinga caves. Many tour operators offer different packages for exploring the park and you can access it from the main entrance at Kuala Tahan. Malaysia is also famous for its beautiful coastline and islands. Tioman Island is one of the largest and among the most beautiful, it also has many standout eco-tourism resorts. The Cameron Highlands district in Pahang are perfect for exploring with a car rental in Malaysia. There are many stunning towns and villages within easy reach.
