Over 20,000 workers built it in the 1800s, its size and historical importance has made the structure a national symbol for Haitians. The nearby Sans-Souci Palace is also a UNESCO world heritage site. Though it is now in ruins it is still a remarkable site that easily evokes how magnificent the palace once was. The Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien in Port-au-Prince is dedicated to Haitian independence and the history and culture of the nation.
