Driving Tips in Spain

If you’re taking a trip that involves driving in Spain, it’s always a good idea to know some of the rules and regulations before you go. Many of the regulations are similar to other European countries, but speed limits and other information can be different. You will be all ready to hit the road after reading our driving guide for Spain.

Speed Limits in Spain

The following speed limits are generally valid unless marked differently by signs. If there is fog, snow, or rain that make visibility less than 50 meters, a speed limit of 50 km/hr (30 mph) applies.

Within city limits:  50 km/hr (30 mph) 
Outside city limits:  70-100 km/hr (43-62 mph) 
Highway/Freeway:   90-120 km/hr (56-75 mph) 

 

Spanish Traffic Laws and Rules

General & Safety

  • Before starting the journey, the driver and passengers must fasten their seat belts and they must remain fastened during the duration of travel.
  • Drivers approaching a traffic jam on highways are recommended to switch on hazard warning lights.
  • Using, operating or holding of mobile phones is prohibited while the engine is running and/or vehicle is moving.
  • When no traffic sign or traffic light is at an intersection the vehicle entering from the right has the right of way.
  • Unnecessary use of the horn is not allowed.
  • If you are driving with children up to 12 years old and less than 4 foot 4 inches (135 cm), you must put them in a specific child seat. Children who are taller than 135 cm may use a booster seat with the seat belt fastened.

Overtaking & Turns

  • Passing in the right lane is prohibited. Use the left lane and return to the right lane as soon as it is safely possible.
  • Turning right on red is not allowed unless otherwise marked by a sign.

Parking

  • In general, parking is prohibited 5 meters from to a bend or intersection.
  • Paid parking areas are highlighted with specific road signs.
  • Pay attention to the colors in the parking zones. Some areas may require payment of a fee.
  • Overnight stays in public parking areas are allowed but camping is not. Please note any additional parking regulations.

Driver’s License

In order to be eligible to drive in Spain, you must always have a valid driver’s license and passport. If your license is in a language that does not use Roman characters (like Chinese or Russian) you will also need an international driver’s license.
