Vehicle Return Process

Vehicle return

Want to return your SIXT+ car? Here you’ll find everything you need to know about the return process: when and where to drop off your vehicle, what’s included, and what happens next. Easy, transparent, and all in one place.

What happens when I return my SIXT+ car subscription vehicle?

Upon return, the vehicle will be inspected for damage and signs of wear and tear, and a comparison will be made with the handover report. We want to make the vehicle return process as transparent as possible for you. Therefore, we ask that you come to the SIXT location during business hours (even if it has a key drop box) and allow at least 30 minutes for a joint inspection of the vehicle. If you return your vehicle outside of business hours and drop off the key, the vehicle inspection will take place without you present.

We will then work with you to prepare a return report and document the vehicle’s condition with photos. Normal signs of wear and tear resulting from regular use of the vehicle will not be considered a violation.

Do I need to clean the vehicle before returning it?

It is not necessary to give your vehicle a complete, thorough cleaning beforehand. However, to avoid additional cleaning fees in case of heavy soiling and to ensure a fair return, your vehicle should not be excessively dirty.

What happens if damage is found?

For each instance of damage identified, you will be responsible for the costs up to the maximum agreed-upon deductible. In this case, the experts from our claims department will contact you via email and ask for your statement regarding the matter, which you can submit by mail, fax, or email. Once the extent of the damage and the circumstances have been determined, we will provide you with further information on how to proceed. However, your credit card will not be charged, and we will not withhold the security deposit, as a damage claim is processed separately.

What counts as normal wear and tear, and what is considered damage?

Normal signs of wear and tear result from everyday use. For example:

  • Minor stone chips without rust formation

  • Normal wear and tear on tires (tread) or brakes

  • Slight scuffing on seat upholstery or interior trim

Damage is defined as defects in the vehicle that go beyond normal wear and tear or that impair the vehicle’s function, safety, or value. For example:

  • Scratches on the rims or tire sidewalls / cracks in the tires

  • Scratches in the paint

  • Dents or scratches on the body

  • Cracks or an excessive number of stone chips in the windshield

  • Burn holes, heavy soiling, or tears in the interior

  • Technical defects caused by improper use
