The drive itself takes around three hours, but we recommend spreading it out over a few days to ensure you savor each thrilling attraction. The Scenic Drive Route
Whilst you sit back and enjoy the drive, get the kids to help spot the handy seagull signposts that demonstrate the way. Even the finest navigators amongst us get lost from time to time, so make sure to upgrade your Sixt rental car with a GPS system just in case. Why not make your 59 Mile Scenic Drive extra special, and complete it in one of our luxury or convertible vehicles, perfect for sight-seeing in fantastic weather. The route begins at the picturesque Embarcadero Waterfront, which is just a short walk from our Sixt San Diego Downtown branch. Those who aren’t strapped for time can take a ferry across to Coronado after visiting the unmissable USS Midway aircraft carrier. The next stop is Harbor Island where you’ll find panoramic views of San Diego Bay and Downtown.
Whereas some of the stops feature breathtaking sights and quick photo moments, some of the locations require much more attention. This is the case for the Mission Bay Aquatic Park which is a 4600-acre aquatic playground with 27 miles of beaches. Here you can explore waterfront shops, enjoy volleyball or watersports and bask in the sun without a care in the world. Another notable mention in this area is the Birch Aquarium which features a vibrant display of the local aquatic wildlife.
If you’re a fan of exploration and something a little different; delve into La Jolla caves and then investigate neighboring La Jolla Cove, a gathering point for seals and snorkelers alike. One of the main spectacles of the scenic drive is Balboa Park, which is the largest urban park in North America and home to many museums, restaurants, the Old Theatre and of course, San Diego Zoo. This stop will take plenty of exploring in order to see each iconic aspect so be sure to allocate a good amount of time for it.
For those interested in history, the Gaslamp Quarter and Oldtown points will be sure to impress, with their excellent mix of Victorian-era and Spanish architecture. The more contemporary styled Horton Plaza is a perfect place to show off your new Sixt car rental – boasting trendy bars, department stores, and cafés. The final stop is the cherished San Diego safari park, where you can watch the animals from the comfort of your stylish, Sixt car rental.
Whether you’re a local or simply just on vacation, the San Diego 59-mile scenic drive is a surefire way of cramming as many fantastic attractions into a small amount of time and also an enjoyable and visually stunning journey.
