Things to do in Luxembourg: Why it’s more than a business destination

When you think of popular tourist destinations, Luxembourg often gets overlooked. Seen mostly as a destination for business trips, this country and city’s history and culture are too often skimmed over – but not for long.

It’s just as unique as any other European destination, and there are plenty of things to see in Luxembourg. Never considered a visit to Luxembourg? Not sure what to see in Luxembourg? Luckily we have a list of Luxembourg attractions to explore. You can use SIXT ride services to get around this unfamiliar place quickly and comfortably. We offer airport transfers, as well as taxi services so you can simply order a ride, sit back and relax.

This castle located in the north of Luxembourg is one of the biggest fortified castles to the west of the Rhine River. It’s just as majestic as it is large. This castle was built in the Romanesque and Gothic styles in the 14th century and is worth a trip to the countryside to explore.

Located in the heart of Luxembourg City, this palace is currently the official residence of the grand duke, and it’s where he performs most of his stately duties. So yes, you’ll be nose-to-nose with European royalty when you visit.

Built in the 16th century, the interior of this building is even more impressive than the grand exterior. You’ll find sweeping staircases and giant chandeliers. Just be aware it’s only open to the public for part of the year, so plan your visit in advance.

Cathédrale Notre-Dame

Many European cities have cathedrals, and this happens to be the only one in the country of Luxembourg. Built in the 1600s, this cathedral is right down the street from the Palais Grand-Ducal.

Luxembourg’s role in World War II isn’t often discussed, but there are interesting remnants here for those that are interested in diving deeper into the city’s history.

Among the most interesting things to do in Luxembourg is to visit the Bock Casemates. These are a large network of underground tunnels and galleries that were first built during the 1600s when the Spanish ruled but were later used as bomb shelters for the population during the war.

Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art

In addition to its history, Luxembourg City is also a center for the arts. This contemporary museum houses a large collection of pieces as well as a park with statues and sculptures. Looking to be a little more interactive? Participate in one of the workshops or attend one of the exhibitions in Luxembourg.

Restaurants in Luxembourg

After a long day spent traveling through the city and the countryside, you’ll want to indulge in a delicious local meal at some of the restaurants in Luxembourg. Luxembourg’s cuisine takes a lot of influence from nearby France and Germany, but with a twist. Luxembourg dumplings, potato pancakes and apples en croute are some of the local favorites.

You’ll want to head to Restaurant Clairefontaine for a more upscale experience. Restaurant Orchidee is known for its regional specialties. Cyrano is popular among locals and has delicious wine to pair with your meal. Luxembourg is also known to have amazing exotic restaurants – especially Greek and South Asian food – so if you’re not a fan of the local cuisine, there’s nothing to worry about.

As you can see, there are plenty of things to do in Luxembourg during your visit. If you’re visiting on business, be sure to get out of the office and do some exploring. Luxembourg attractions are highly underrated, but when you travel to Luxembourg, you certainly won’t regret it. As a bonus, you can use SIXT ride services to get around Luxembourg City and out to the more distant castles to make your trip easier and more convenient. Happy travels!
