Best Cities to Visit for a Digital Detox

Ready to find the perfect destination to recharge your mind and body? Our breakdown of the best cities to visit for a digital detox highlights the top destinations that balance minimal internet coverage, computer device usage, and 5G coverage.

Map of digital detox destinations

Our research has identified the digital detox destinations that provide the perfect opportunity to unplug from technology.

  1. Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage tops the list as the ultimate digital detox destination. With 1.35% of households not having internet subscriptions and a 4.84% of households lacking computers, Anchorage boasts a minimal reliance on digital connectivity. With 66 unique tourist attractions and limited 5G coverage at just 30.54%, Anchorage provides the perfect blend of isolation and adventure. Visitors can immerse themselves in nature with activities like hiking in Chugach State Park, wildlife spotting, and glacier tours. The slower pace and breathtaking scenery make it an ideal retreat from the digital world.

  1. Honolulu, Hawaii

Honolulu ranks second with a balance of digital accessibility and escape, boasting 240 tourist attractions and a high 85.12% 5G coverage. Though 3.86% of households lack internet subscriptions, its natural beauty encourages visitors to disconnect. Renowned for iconic spots like Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head, Honolulu offers a mix of relaxation and adventure. Visitors can trade screen time for surfing lessons, snorkeling in Hanauma Bay, or exploring traditional Hawaiian culture at Iolani Palace.

  1. Lakewood, New Jersey

Lakewood stands out for its high percentage of households without internet subscriptions (19.21%) and computers (44%), making it a true digital detox haven. Despite having fewer tourist attractions, the city is rich in serene experiences. Lakewood’s scenic parks, like Ocean County Park, and its proximity to the historic Strand Theater create an inviting atmosphere for unplugging. Whether enjoying the tranquil beauty of the area or connecting with its vibrant local community, visitors can easily step away from their devices.

  1. Palo Alto, California

Known as the tech hub of Silicon Valley, Palo Alto surprisingly ranks high for a digital detox due to its percentage of households without internet (1.69%) and computers (3.18%). With 240 tourist attractions and 85.08% 5G coverage, it offers a unique opportunity to unplug amidst innovation. Visitors can escape to serene spots like the Stanford Dish hiking trail or the nearby redwoods of Big Basin State Park. Cultural attractions such as the Cantor Arts Center provide enriching offline experiences in this otherwise tech-centric destination.

  1. Suffolk, Virginia

Rounding out the top five, Suffolk’s 1.99% of households without internet subscriptions and 6.68% lacking computers highlight its balanced approach to connectivity. With 16 tourist attractions and 66.12% 5G coverage, it provides a peaceful retreat with a slower pace of life. Visitors can explore the Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, take scenic drives through historic districts, or sample the area’s famed peanuts. Suffolk’s charm lies in its ability to offer a tranquil and refreshing escape.

Choosing the Digital Detox City That Meets Your Preferences

From serene retreats to off-the-grid escapes, these destinations offer the perfect opportunity to unplug and rediscover a life free from digital distractions. Whether you’re seeking tranquility, connection with nature, or simply a break from constant connectivity, these spots provide the ideal backdrop for a balanced and rejuvenating reset.

Methodology

Using various metrics from the US Census and the Federal Communications Commission we searched 585 cities (who had a population under 350,000 people) to identify where would be best for a digital detox. We created a rank based on how many people in the city had a computer, if they had a broadband service, the city’s 5G coverage and how many tourist attractions each city had within a 5 mile radius.
