Explore the Cities Behind Gaming Culture

Cities like Tokyo, New York City, London, San Francisco, and Milan have become closely tied to arcade and gaming culture through their recognizable streets, nightlife, and entertainment districts. Over the years, racing and open-world games turned these destinations into memorable digital settings that introduced players to iconic city landmarks and atmospheres.

Games like Midtown Madness and Project Gotham Racing 4 recreated cities including New York City, London, San Francisco, and Tokyo, while The Crew 2 connected destinations across the United States into one explorable world. Tokyo in particular has become one of gaming’s most recognizable urban settings, with titles like Gran Turismo 7 highlighting its neon-lit atmosphere and deep arcade culture.

Whether it’s retro arcades or immersive gaming venues, these destinations continue to bring gaming culture to life beyond the screen. With SIXT, travelers can easily connect iconic entertainment districts and arcade destinations into one seamless journey built around nostalgia, exploration, and discovery.

Methodology

To rank the best arcades in the U.S., we analyzed publicly available data across several key factors, including Google reviews (25%), estimated number of games from business websites (20%), search volume for “[arcade name] arcade” in a keyword tool (10%), food service options (10%), arcade size (10%), unique experiences such as VR or themed attractions (15%), and whether unlimited play passes are offered (10%), based on information from business websites. To reduce bias toward major cities or highly touristic destinations, scores were adjusted for city population, ensuring smaller but high-quality arcades could compete fairly. The resulting ranking highlights destinations that deliver the strongest mix of fun, nostalgia, and well-rounded visitor experiences. Data accurate as of April 1, 2026.
