  • Honolulu, O’ahu: This capital city has so much to do it’s hard to know where to start. If you want a Hawaiian beach experience, head to iconic Waikiki Beach where surfing was said to have gotten its start. Hiking to the top of the Diamond Head State Monument gives you great views over the island and the Pacific Ocean. Learn about Hawaii’s place in military history at the USS Arizona or the Pearl Harbor National Memorial.
  • Lahaina, Maui: This town on the west coast of Maui has great beaches and sightseeing opportunities. Ka’anapali Beach is the popular choice for swimming and water sports, while Napili Beach is great for snorkeling. Head to Front Street for shopping and historic buildings. Lahaina is also a great spot to go whale watching, and there are numerous boat tours to help you spot some!
  • Kailua-Kona, Hawaii: Located on the “Big Island” of Hawaii, Kailua-Kona has several noteworthy beaches and a lot of points of Hawaiian history to explore. Hulihe’e Palace was the former summer home for Hawaii’s royalty and you can also find a historic church and temple nearby. Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park has great scenery and ancient Hawaiian art. Also, be sure to sample some of the coffee that Kona is known for!

While summer in Hawaii can be hot, with temperatures in the upper 70s and 80s on average, there is almost always a breeze and almost always the ocean nearby to cool off in. Surfing is at its best for non-pros on the North Shore of Hawaii and at Waikiki Beach in O’ahu in the summer. Less rain during the summer months makes it the optimal time for hiking. There are also several annual celebrations in the summer. On June 11, Kamehameha Day pays respect to King Kamehameha I, who founded the Kingdom of Hawaii, with parades and other activities.
