With SIXT share, you can reduce your deductible from €950 down to €0 by adding a protection option before your trip starts — right in the SIXT app at the time of reservation.
How protection options work
The standard deductible per damage is €950. Protection options are available in Germany and the Netherlands, and let you lower that amount. Prices vary by vehicle category and value, so the exact price for your chosen vehicle is shown in the SIXT app when you book.
Per-minute, hourly, and daily rates
Protection options are priced to match your rental type:
- Per-minute rentals — protection is charged at a per-minute rate.
- Hourly or daily packages — a discounted flat rate applies. You'll see the full cost of your protection option before the trip begins, and you save compared to the per-minute rate.
Once you select an hourly or daily package, per-minute protection booking is no longer available for that trip. Keep in mind that unused minutes in a package are non-refundable. When a package expires, billing switches back to per-minute rates — you can check the applicable rate for your vehicle in the price overview in the SIXT app.
Why do prices vary?
Protection option prices reflect the vehicle category and its value, as well as your rental duration. This ensures you pay a fair rate for the level of coverage that matches your trip.
How to add a protection option
- Open the SIXT app and select your vehicle.
- On the booking page, tap the protection option tile that matches your preferred deductible.
- To apply the same protection automatically to future trips, check the box to save your preference.
Important: Protection options can only be added before you unlock the vehicle — they cannot be added once the rental has started.
Can I use my own car insurance?
No — private car insurance does not apply to SIXT share vehicles. You must use one of the protection options available in the app.
