Driver’s License Requirements

A valid driver’s license for all named drivers is required when booking a car rental with SIXT. Minimum age and additional drivers

The minimum age in most locations is 21. Drivers between the ages of 21 to 24 are subjected to renting only from specific car categories with an Underage Driver Fee applied. Additional drivers must be present at the time of pickup and have a valid driver’s license.

Refueling

Return your vehicle refueled at the same level in which it was received at the time of pickup. Options to pre-pay for fuel are also available in case of a rushed return.

Accidents

In the event of an accident, please contact the local authorities first to file a police report and report any damages to the rental car directly to SIXT. Use the accident report form enclosed with your vehicle documents.

Tips for the Region

Aside from its stunning beaches, Oahu is host to jaw-dropping natural landscapes, including two mountain ranges. Enjoy a car rental road trip through Oahu to ensure you’ll have the opportunity to see the beauty and experience the divine ambiance that keeps visitors coming to Hawaii.

Diamond Head

A must-visit for travelers to Honolulu, challenge yourself with a hike up Diamond Head and find yourself in the middle of a volcanic crater. Those who would rather skip the hike, but still want those breathtaking views of Diamond Head and the coastline, can take a scenic drive on Diamond Head Road. Stop at the Kuilei Cliffs lookout point for views of Oahu’s south shore and upscale neighborhood of Kahala.

Central Oahu

It’s tempting to stick to the coast when visiting an island, but Oahu’s central region is rich with interesting and off-the-beaten-track sights to see. Not even a half-hour drive from Honolulu is Waipahu. There you will find an outdoor museum dedicated to the sugar, banana, and pineapple plantations of the past and the story of Hawaii that highlights its diverse cultural history. Explore Wahiawa to visit the Dole Pineapple Plantation and Hawaiian Railway Society or simply stop in on your drive to the North Shore for a bite to eat at one of its small eateries.

Windward Coast

Sometimes overshadowed by the North Shore or Honolulu area, Oahu’s Windward Coast is a treasure trove of diverse landscapes and quaint towns. Drive through a canopy-covered road at Morgan’s Corner and see the island’s lush vegetation firsthand. Take a road trip in Oahu and cruise along Pali Highway (Route 61) to get to Kailua or Kaneohe. Stop at the Nuuanu Pali lookout along the way for a spectacular view of Oahu’s Windward side.

Important Cities

Oahu’s largest city is undoubtedly Honolulu, but the island is sprinkled with smaller towns and sleepy getaways that visitors would be remiss to not stop by. From the waves of the North Shore to crystal clear beaches of the Windward Coast, explore it all with your SIXT rent a car.

Honolulu

Honolulu’s location on Oahu and major international airports make the island an important starting point for those visiting Hawaii. The city itself plays host to some of the state’s most iconic locations and cliché, but necessary experiences during a visit to the Aloha State. Visit Waikiki for its famous white sand beach and sunbathe while sipping a Mai Tai. Head downtown for some urban exploring and meander through the city’s historic district to visit Chinatown and see the Iolani Palace. Just northwest of the city’s main center is the Pearl Harbor National Memorial, a must-see for those who wish to commemorate the Pearl Harbor attack and learn more about America’s WWII history. Our Oahu car rental branch at the airport is conveniently located for you to get to the city’s major attractions.

Haleiwa

Located on the North Shore, Haleiwa is known for its crystalline beaches and impressive big wave surfing. The town’s reputation as a mecca for surfers means lots of opportunities to watch amateur to professional surfers take on the waves or even try it yourself. Take a break from the water to discover the historic plantation buildings influenced by the Waialua Sugar Company and visit locally owned businesses. Be sure to try refreshing Hawaiian shave ice for a little taste of history. Get to Haleiwa with a rental car from Honolulu International Airport and enjoy a scenic drive along Kamehameha Highway.

Kailua

A refuge from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu, take your rental car to Kailua, an idyllic beach town located on Oahu’s windward shore. Its laid-back style offers visitors to Oahu the opportunity to experience local life in paradise at its finest. Take to the beach for a relaxing dip in the ocean or get your adrenaline rushing with body or windsurfing. Paddle out to the Mokulua Island for a view of Oahu’s coast and admire the stunning scenery. For a once in a lifetime experience, get up early and watch the sunrise as it ascends into the morning sky over the Pacific Ocean at one of the town’s public beaches.

Climate, Cuisine and Traveling with Children

Climate

Hawaii is known as a paradise for a reason and the island of Oahu holds up that reputation. Temperatures are warm year-round, ranging between 60 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, and there are only two main seasons. April to October is typically the dry season with November to March the wet season. Between December and August is the most popular time for visitors to travel to Oahu, so consider coming during off-peak months to avoid the crowds.

Cuisine

Experience Oahu’s cultural diversity through its food. With Japanese, Filipino, Chinese, indigenous, and even more influences, cuisine in Oahu is truly a treat for those who appreciate fusion dishes. Be sure to try Kalua pig at a luau or Saimin noodles to witness food fusion firsthand. And a trip to Hawaii isn’t complete without shave ice to keep you cool on those extra hot days!

Traveling with Children

With such a range of activities available, those traveling with children will be happy to know there’s something for everyone. Car rental in Oahu makes getting around that much easier so you can transport everyone at the same time. Meet Moana at the KA WA’A luau at Disney Aulani or take a kid-friendly hike at Ka’ena Point Trail. Visit the Polynesian Cultural Centre to learn more about Polynesian cultures.
