What to Do in Belgrade in Winter 2019

With snow cover from early November until April, the capital of Serbia is a magical place to visit in the winter. Throughout December, the streets are lit with Christmas decorations while the smell of cinnamon-infused mulled Rakija hangs in the air. Christmas markets appear in Knez Mihailova and Trg Republike squares, turning the area into a Santa's wonderland of decoration and craft stalls as well as pop-up kiosks where you can sample local delicacies. Many of cultural events are held in early winter including the Belgrade Music Festival, the Belgrade Tango Festival, and the Street of Open Heart Carnival held on New Years Day. An open-air ice rink also appears on Trg Nikole Square. There are also museums to explore out of the cold. The museum of Yugoslavia documents the dramatic history of that country while the Museum of Contemporary Art is a treasure trove of contemporary painting and sculpture. If you plan to leave the city, it is a good idea to rent a 4x4 or SUV with winter tires.

Sixt Tips

The history of the capital dates to the 4th-century B.C. when Celtic tribes settled in the region. Over the centuries, Serbia has come under Roman, Hungarian, and Ottoman rule until independence in 1878. After the First World War, it was absorbed into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and from 1945 until his death in 1980 was strictly controlled by Marshal Tito. Turbulent times followed his death but today both Serbia and its capital are growing both culturally and economically. When you rent a car in Belgrade you can fully experience the architecture of this fascinating city. See the revitalization of the Savamala Quarter or admire the Art Nouveau buildings on Terazije Street. Karadjordjeva Street was built in the early 19th century for the city's elite and now has a lively artistic and nightlife vibe.

Sightseeing Destinations

While you should take in the unique atmosphere of Knez Mihailova and Stari Grad, the Old Town is best experienced on foot. Grand coffee houses are perfect for people watching between visits to attractions such as the Belgrade Fortress that has been destroyed and rebuilt at least 40 times since it was first built by the Celts. Dominating the city skyline is the dome of Sveti Sava, the second-largest Orthodox Church in the world. When the sun shines, make the short drive to Ada Ciganlija, an artificial island in the River Sava. Laze around on the beaches, dive into the water, enjoy some water sports or even go bungee jumping. Towering over the city is Mount Avala. It is dominated by a broadcasting tower with a cafe and viewing platforms. Also, at Mount Avala is the Monument to the Unknown Soldier.
