Traffic Information

Athens is the starting point for two of the main motorways in Greece. The northbound A1/E75 runs to Thessaloniki and the westbound A8/E95 that runs to Patras. The Attiki Odos toll road (A6) serves the urban core of Athens and its main section can be used to reach the Athens International Airport. Two beltways, the Aigaleo Beltway (A65) and the Hymettus Beltway (A64) serve the western and eastern parts of Athens.

When driving in Athens be aware the speed limit is 31 mph in the city. Make sure to not drive in the bus lanes which are marked by a yellow divider, violators may be subject to fines. As you will be sharing the road with many motorbikes who may or may not follow the rules accordingly, we advise to take extra caution. Parking spots in downtown Athens are hard to come by so it is best to arrange to stay at a hotel with a parking garage.

Sightseeing Destinations

Pireas is the main port of Athens and the biggest in all of Greece. Divided into three parts each has attractions close by. The central port is the center of activity in Pireas and a stroll around gives you a chance to check out the cargo ships and sea liners. Or take in the impressive yachts found in the Zea marina as you enjoy a meal overlooking the sea. Afterwards head to the archaeological museum and the Ancient Theater of Zea that is right next to it. If you want a more local vibe then eat some seafood from a local establishment at the Mikrolimano port. Before driving back to Athens make a stop in Kastella and walk to the top of the hill for a peek at the picturesque houses and alleys of this popular district.

To the east of Athens lies the seaport of Rafina. A popular weekend destination due to its access to the Cyclades islands and its excellent dining options. Many restaurants specialize in fried squid and other delicacies from the sea.

What to Do in Athens in Winter 2020

Winter in Athens generally has mild weather and there is a lot to see with fewer people at popular attractions. In general, temperatures are in the mid-50s during the day, although can get much cooler at night, and winter is also the rainy season. There is even the possibility of snow! Things to do outside include going to the top of Mt. Lycabettus, the highest point in Athens, either by tram or by foot. You can also wander through the National Garden or visit the Acropolis or Parthenon. There are so many ancient ruins in the middle of Athens you will always have something to see! If traveling to the city in winter, be sure to bring an umbrella or rain coat. A luxury or compact sedan will get you around this historic city easily.
