Traffic Information

Athens is the starting point for two of the main motorways in Greece. The northbound A1/E75 runs to Thessaloniki and the westbound A8/E95 that runs to Patras. The Attiki Odos toll road (A6) serves the urban core of Athens and its main section can be used to reach the Athens International Airport. Two beltways, the Aigaleo Beltway (A65) and the Hymettus Beltway(A64) serve the western and eastern parts of Athens.

When driving in Athens be aware the speed limit is 31 mph in the city. Make sure to not drive in the bus lanes which are marked by a yellow divider, violators may be subject to fines. As you will be sharing the road with many motorbikes who may or may not follow the rules accordingly, we advise to take extra caution. Parking spots in downtown Athens are hard to come by so it is best to arrange to stay at a hotel with a parking garage.

Athens, is an iconic city, home to many of the ancient treasures of Greece. Rather sprawled out the major Greek, Roman and Byzanite landmarks are mostly found in and around the city center. See the famous sights of the Acropolis and check out the two main squares: Syntagma Square and Omonia Square. Walk the pedestrian only Ermou Street between Syntagma Square and Monastiraki for best shopping. Then drive your car to explore the various neighborhoods of Athens. Tour different districts like the bohemian Metaxourgeio neighborhood or the upscale boutiques and galleries of Kolonaki. You can soak up the sun with a drive to the beaches of Attica or head up to the Kessariani Monastery.

Pireas

Pireas is the main port of Athens and the biggest in all of Greece. Divided into three parts each has attractions close by. The central port is the center of activity in Pireas and a stroll around gives you a chance to check out the cargo ships and sea liners. Or take in the impressive yachts found in the Zea marina as you enjoy a meal overlooking the sea. Afterwards head to the archaeological museum and the Ancient Theater of Zea that is right next to it. If you want a more local vibe then eat some seafood from a local establishment at the Mikrolimano port. Before driving back to Athens make a stop in Kastella and walk to the top of the hill for a peek at the picturesque houses and alleys of this popular district.

Do I need a credit card?

Paying with a major credit card is the preferred method of payment and Sixt accepts all major credit cards. The payment method must have been issued in the name of the driver and this must be presented at the time of vehicle pick-up and be valid at this time. Which documents are needed to pick up a rental car?

A valid driver's license for all named drivers, valid for a minimum of 12 months. Driver's licenses printed in non-Roman alphabet (Arabic, Chinese, Cyrillic, etc.) must be accompanied by an International Driving Permit. Any driver's license originating from countries not part of the international driver's license treaty must also be accompanied by an official translation. A valid ID card or passport might also be required at time of pick up, please refer to our Rental Information page to see the exact requirements for the country your rental will take place in.

What do the various insurance options cover?

We have a wide range of insurance options, including Third Party Liability, Loss Damage Waiver, Tire and Windscreen cover, and Personal Accident Protection. What is included in the rental charges?

Can I rent a specific car model?

No. Reservations are only guaranteed for the selected car category.

Can I change my booking and do I have to pay a cancellation fee?

Cancellations and changes can be made at any point prior to the start of the rental, but may in some cases incur additional charges. Can I cross borders with my rental car?

Territorial restrictions apply depending on the country the rental takes place and where the vehicle will be driven to. For specific information please contact a Sixt booking agent or refer to our Rental Information page where you can find county specific information from our drop down menu.

Can I rent the car at one place and drop it off at another station?

Yes, although this may incur a one-way rental fee that will be shown during the booking process. Please note: one-way rentals may be restricted if you plan on crossing borders so it is best to check our Rental Information page for country specific information.

What is Sixt's refueling policy?

All vehicles are supplied with a full tank of fuel and should be refilled prior to return to Sixt, otherwise our current refueling charges will apply. Alternatively, you may purchase a tankful of fuel at the time of rental at a price that is competitive with local fuel stations and return the tank empty. No refunds will be given for unused fuel.

What add-ons are available and how much do they cost?

Sixt offers optional add-ons such as child seats, guaranteed navigations systems, additional drivers, winter tires, snow chains and luggage racks. Including extras will incur additional fees and are subject to availability at Sixt rent a car locations.

Can I rent a car with unlimited mileage?

Sixt rent a car offers unlimited mileage on select vehicles at select Sixt locations.

Does Sixt deliver and/or collect rental cars?

Deliveries and collections are available at select Sixt rent a car locations and are subject to additional fees.

Do I have to pay a security deposit?

Generally, an advance charge approval is obtained for the chosen means of payment as a security. Often a deposit of up to three times the rental price is charged to the chosen means of payment as a security. The exact deposit is determined on collection since the amount is dependent on the vehicle. For example, the deposit for high-value vehicles may differ.
