Traffic Information

Lisbon benefits from an airport that is close to the city center. It is just four miles or so north of the center and will take around eighteen minutes on the Av. Alm. Gago Coutinho. Choosing the Av. de Roma route will take a little longer at twenty-one minutes, while the E1 is an alternative during peak times. This is around 6.5 miles and will take around twenty-five minutes in normal traffic. The city is well connected by a network of motorways, which makes car rental in Lisbon a good way to get around. The A2 is the main route south, connecting with the 25 de Abril bridge. The A1 is the major route north and connects Lisbon to Porto. The A5 runs west to Estoril and Cascais, while the A6 is the main route east and runs to Madrid.

The city is also served by three ring roads. The 2nd circular joins the A1 to the IC19, while the CRIL joins the A1 with Vasco de Gama bridge. The CREL joins the A8, A5 and A1 and runs to the coast at Estoril. On-street parking in Lisbon is indicated by a blue square sign with a white 'P'. Parking charges are usually in place from 8am to 8pm on weekdays, 8am to 6pm on Saturdays and free on Sundays. If parking on the street make sure your car is tight to the curb so it is not blocking the tramways. The city also has a number of parking garages in the busiest areas.

Sixt Tips

Lisbon is an exciting city but still not as touristy as some other European capitals. It is also situated in a stunning location on the Tagus river. For the best views of the city, cross the river to Cacilhas and climb to the Cristo Rei. This monumental statue of Christ is similar to the one in Rio de Janeiro and stands 100m tall. The elevator to the top costs five euros but the views are certainly worth it. More great views can be enjoyed from the Castelo de Sao Jorge, which can be reached by an enjoyable walk through the old town and the Alfama neighborhood. The main city square of Rossio is the hub of city life, while Principe Real has some of the best shopping. For the best nightlife in the city, climb up to Barrio alto from Chiado. Lovers of architecture must visit Belem and its extensive collection of historic buildings and monuments, such as the Belem Tower and Jeronimos Monastery. Alfama is the oldest neighborhood in Lisbon and its labyrinth of narrow streets has some of the most atmospheric restaurants and bars.
