What to Do in Beirut

What to Do in Beirut

This seaside capital city of Lebanon has a lot to offer its visitors. You will do well to walk around the city and absorb its architecture and historical charm. Stop at the Beirut Souks, Martyrs’ Square, Nijmeh Square and Hamra Street before having lunch by the water. A drive to the Our Lady of Lebanon shrine north of Beirut offers a great view over Jounieh or go a bit south to the Pigeon Rocks.

What to Do in Beirut in Summer

The good news about summer in Beirut is there is no rain, but the bad news is it’s very hot. Walk along the Corniche or rent a bike to get some ocean breeze, and then visit an outdoor souk. There are also several beach resorts for you to relax. Go to Mar Mikhael or Gemmyzeh for a hipper and more youthful scene. Or walk around the city to see the American University of Beirut campus and the destroyed Holiday Inn to see glimpses of the city from before and after its war-torn past. If planning a summer visit, be aware that Ramadan and the Islamic New Year may mean daytime business closures.
