Tips for the Region

Milan is the home of Italy's high fashion industry and central to financial and political life in the country. In Milan itself you will find a bustling metropolis bursting with Roman ruins, majestic architecture, generous museums and fantastic eateries. To the north of Milan there are lakes and craggy mountains and to the south lush farmlands and rolling hills. The area is dotted with Renaissance towns and cities that, although less frequented than Milan, are often filled with stunning architecture and superb restaurants.

Lake Como is the most spectacular of this region's lakes and a great destination for a road trip with your car rental in Northern Italy. The steep sides of the glacial lake are covered with lush forest while the shoreline is studded with fantastic villas.

Important Cities

Monza

Only nine miles north of Milan, Monza is well known for the Autodromo Nazionale Monza that hosts the Formula One Italian Grand Prix. The city also boasts impressive Roman and renaissance architecture, the 1693-acre Monza Park and the Romanesque-Gothic Duomo cathedral. Monza cathedral has an amazing treasury, it contains many early examples of medieval Christian art including some of the earliest depictions of the crucifixion and nativity of Jesus.

Milan

Milan is the second richest city in the European Union. Besides being a major fashion and design capital, it is home to Italy's stock exchange and numerous international financial institutions. The city can get congested with its high population and over 9 million visitors annually. The cuisine is just as grand as its architecture and institutions, with one of the highest number of Michelin accredited restaurants in Italy. It is a feast for architecture lovers, the Piazza Duomo is not to be missed featuring both Milan Cathedral and Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele II.

Vigevano

Vigevano is a historic art town with breathtaking Renaissance architecture. It is only 20 miles away from Milan making it a easy day trip with your car rental. It is less popular and congested which also makes it an ideal destination for some relaxed sightseeing. Lovers of Italian shoes will be enthralled as Vigevano still has a flourishing shoe making industry. The Il Museo della Calzatura e della Tecnica Calzaturiera is an fun stop as this excellent shoe museum is dedicated to the history of shoe production. A trip to Vigevano is not complete without a visit to the Piazza Ducale and tower of Bramante, awe-inspiring examples of Renaissance architecture.

Climate, Cuisine & Travel with Children

Climate

With a temperate oceanic climate expect much of the region to have baking hot summers and cold foggy winters. When it rains in the summer it is usually heavy with thunderstorms. This varies dramatically in the Alps where above 1,500 meters temperatures plummet and there are copious amounts of snowfall. If you are taking your car rental in Northern Italy into the Alps we have snow chains and ski racks in our optional extras that can be added while booking online.

Cuisine

Distinct from Southern Italy, Lombard and Milanese cuisine often replaces pasta with polenta and of course, Arborio risotto rice. The food is often more meat based and relies on butter and lard as opposed to the South's use of olive oil and tomato. Around lake Como you will find the cuisine heavily based around the lake's freshwater fish, while in other places pork and veal are particularly popular. The delicious saffron infused 'risotto alla Milanese' is common throughout the region.

Traveling with Children

In Milan there are many fantastic museums for children. In the Museo Nazionale della Scienza e della Technologia, kids will love the Leanardo Da Vinci exhibits with their models of a flying machine, a pontoon bridge and a paddle boat. A visit to Sforza Castle will entertain children and adults, Da Vinci stayed here for a number of years and even decorated some rooms in the castle. Most towns and cities have excellent public parks and playing facilities, and you are never far from a delicious gelato ice cream vendor.
