Rental Information

Upon delivery of the vehicle, the renter and driver must present a valid driving licence entitling them to drive the vehicle in question together with a valid identity card or passport. Photocopies, digital licenses, Learner's Permits, and driver's licenses with driving restrictions will not be accepted.

Valid driving licenses issued by member states of the European Union and the European Economic Area are equivalent to the corresponding Italian driving licenses.

Valid driving licenses from countries who are not EU member states nor party to the European Economic Area are accepted if the holders have not been resident in Italy for more than one year and, together with the licence, have an international permit or an official Italian translation of the license. Foreign national driver's licences that conform with the provisions of Annex 6 to the Convention on Road Traffic dated 8 November 1968 are however accepted without international permit or official Italian translation of the licence. Any certificates of qualification or titles to drive certain vehicles, prescribed by the issuing state, must be presented for the purpose of renting such vehicles. Sixt supports Chinese customers with the necessary translations via Sixt WeChat Account or via following link: Link. This or any other kind of valid translation of the driving license can only be accepted if accompanied by the original driving license. Driving licences issued by the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, Gibraltar, the Bailiwick of Guernsey, the Isle of Man, and the Bailiwick of Jersey are, as of 1 January 2021, subject to the regulations applicable to driving licences issued by countries that are not members of the European Union or the European Economic Area.

In addition, renters with Italian residence must indicate their tax code, in case of rental as a private individual, or the VAT number of the company, in case of rental for business reasons.

Please note that a driver's license conforming to the European model or issued in paper format must be presented. Other formats (including but not limited to digital driver's licenses or scanned copies or photocopies of digital driver's licenses) will not be accepted. The mobile driving licence, as a digital version of the driving licence available through the Italian digital wallet, fulfils the requirement to present a driving licence for circulation within the national territory. However, for verification purposes at the time of vehicle handover, the rental company may still require the presentation of the physical document.

Certain regulations apply related to minimum age and possession of driver's license which can be found during the booking process depending on the booked vehicle category. Basically, the minimum age for every driver is 18 years (having held the driving license for at least 1 year). A deviation from the minimum age is possible depending on the vehicle.

A young driver surcharge applies for drivers under 25 years.

In any case, any driving restrictions provided for by the applicable legislation and applicable to the individual driver, including those relating to novice drivers, shall remain in force.

All credit and debit cards of internationally recognised credit card companies (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, JCB), credit cards by China Union Pay, Airplus and Amex BTA/iBTA are accepted as payment methods, whereas all pre-paid cards are not accepted. Sixt accepts digital wallets by Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Diners Club, Discover, JCB and Debit Maestro.* * In case the digital card is not recognised at the terminal, customers must use a physical Maestro card for Contactless (NFC) or Chip-and-Pin transactions. Maestro cards issued in Germany and co-branded with Girocard are not available for Digital Wallet payments. The co-branded Girocard Maestro is added to Wallets as a pure Girocard without Maestro function. The payment method must have been issued in the name of the driver. This must be presented at the time of vehicle pick-up and be valid at this time. The amount that will be debited includes the rental price as well as all additional extras and charges.

PayPal is accepted for prepaid bookings at selected locations. The use of PayPal and the PayPal website is subject to the applicable PayPal terms and conditions. A credit or debit card must be presented on pick-up of the vehicle to make a security deposit. The renter must be the PayPal account holder.

Apple Digital wallet is accepted for Prepaid bookings, and Digital checkout at selected locations. Debit cards or prepaid cards cannot be used for payments via Apple Pay. The use of Apple Pay is subject to the applicable Apple terms and conditions. At pick up of the vehicle customers must either present a credit or debit card or use Apple Pay (if available) at the counter to make a security deposit.

Payment with a Maestro/V PAY card is not permitted for mobile check-in and long-term rentals.

For business customers with which Sixt has entered into a framework contract, Sixt also accepts virtual payment methods, such as AirPlus and Amex BTA/iBTA. Requirements for the above are hereby (i) the existence of a valid framework contract, (ii) a cost absorption declaration for future rental under the terms of this framework contract, and (iii) a reservation with a customer number related to the framework contract.

Cash and cheques are not accepted.

Sixt CarExpress Servicecard (Advantage Circle) is only accepted in combination with a valid means of payment.

As security, the means of payment is debited with a deposit amount. The amount of the deposit depends on the vehicle group of the rented vehicle and according to the following table:

Please note, that payments with credit card may require the PIN of the credit card.

By booking the "Sixt Luck Dip Car" (Acriss code CZMR) customers will have the opportunity to receive a car from one of the following groups: Economy, Compact, Intermediate, Standard or Full Size. The group will depend on daily availability at the branch.

In case of prepaid rate, a deposit equal to the total amount of the selected services (including booked extras and taxes) will be deposited, in accordance with art. 1385 of the Italian Civil Code. The driver and payment details are fixed in writing at the time of booking and cannot be changed If the vehicle is not picked up or if the customer does not show up at the agreed time and place, Sixt will retain the deposit as a penalty. If the customer cancels the reservation, Sixt shall keep part of the deposit.

A booking can be cancelled before the start of the rental. In the event of a cancellation, a cancellation fee will be charged to the rental advance payment already made, depending on the time of the cancellation. Cancellation fees will in no case exceed the total amount paid in advance. Cancellations prior to the scheduled start of the rental period will incur a cancellation fee of EUR99. Any remaining prepaid amount in excess of EUR99 will be refunded.

Cancellations or changes made within 24 hours of booking can be completed free of charge, provided the scheduled pick-up time is more than 48 hours away.

The booking may be changed up to one hour before the scheduled beginning of the rental period. There will be a booking modification fee of EUR 29.99 plus any difference between the original rate and the rate applicable to the adjusted rental period. A change from a prepaid rate to a non-prepaid rate is not possible.

All rental vehicles are covered by Third-Party Liability Insurance in accordance with the applicable legal provisions. The coverage insures damage caused to third parties, including bodily injury and property damage, up to a maximum limit of EUR 25 million per claim.

Excluded from the insurance is the use of the vehicle for the transport of dangerous goods. All protection as part of the rental contract will become void, in particular, if an unauthorized driver has used the vehicle or if the driver of the vehicle does not possess the required driver's licence at the time of the event giving rise to claim.

Collision damage waiver removes the drivers responsibility to a part of the vehicle in case of damage.

If collision damage waiver is accepted, the customer is entitled, depending on the vehicle, to a deductible of EUR 1,300.00 to EUR 5,000.00. In addition, a reduction of the deductible is possible.

In the event of willful or grossly negligent damage caused, a claim on the agreed fully comprehensive cover (incl. theft cover) can be reduced or lapsed.

If no fully comprehensive cover has been arranged, the leaser is responsible for all damage to the car not proven to be caused by a third party, and shall be liable for up to the full value of the vehicle.

The theft waiver removes the drivers responsibility to a part of the vehicle in case of theft.

If anti-theft cover is concluded, liability ranges from a deductible of EUR 1,800 to EUR 7,000, depending on the vehicle. In addition a reduction in the deductible is possible.

In the event of willful or grossly negligent damage caused, a claim on the arranged theft cover can be reduced or lapsed.

If no theft cover has been arranged, the leaser is responsible for the loss of the rental car and is liable for up to the full value of the vehicle.

By adding Personal Accident Insurance or Travel Personal Accident Insurance, cover can also be extended to the personal consequences of an accident. Further information is provided during the booking process or via the following link: Link.

The tire and glass coverage provides protection for damages on tires, windscreen, side windows and the rear window with a deductible of EUR 0.00.

If no glass and tyre cover has been arranged, the leaser shall be liable for up to the full amount of the damage.

The roadside protection is an extended breakdown protection during the rental and protects you at home and abroad against high service and repair costs for the following incidents caused by you: key locked inside the vehicle, loss of keys, getting stuck, jump start in the event of an empty battery and breakdown due to lack of fuel or electricity.

All services may only be ordered by a direct claim with Sixt 24-hour Roadside Assistance. They shall also determine the type and extent of service required to ensure the renter stays mobile. If any damage to the rental vehicle occurs which is not covered by Sixt within the scope of the Roadside Protection, the renter is liable for such damage.

By selecting interior protection, liability can be eliminated if the vehicle interior is soiled or damaged.

By taking out Complementary Protection Plus, SIXT waives its right to claim compensation from the renter for damage to the rented vehicle amounting to EUR 500 or less per individual damaging event, as well as its right to claim compensation for damage to the rented vehicle amounting to more than EUR 30,000 per individual damaging event. The provisions of the General Terms and Conditions in Section J.2, which govern cases of exclusion of contractual liability limitations, also apply in full to this waiver. In particular, the waiver does not apply if the damage was caused intentionally by the renter or an authorised driver. The provisions of Complementary Protection Plus are independent and separate from any insurance policy or protection package that the renter may have taken out through third parties (e.g. travel portals or credit card companies).

The vehicle selection can restrict travel to certain countries. For a description of these restrictions on admission, the countries are divided into four zones.

Zone I: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Gibraltar, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, San Marino, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain and Vatican

Zone II: Croatia, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia

Zone III: Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania

Zone IV: All countries that are not in zone I, II or III.

Car groups in the Luxury Elite (W***) and Extraordinary (X***) categories, Fullsize Elite Vans (GVAR), Special Car (UVAR) and all Sports & Luxury Cars may only enter zone I countries.

Car groups in the Premium (P***), Premium Elite (U***) and Luxury (L***) categories, Special Cars up to and including Premium Elite (**S*) as well as all vans and trucks may only enter countries in zones I and II.

Vehicles of all other groups may enter in zones I, II and III.

Entry into any country in zone IV is not permitted with any Sixt vehicle.

Leaving the European continent is not permitted. This includes the Spanish exclaves of Ceuta & Melilla. The renter undertakes to comply with all official entry, exit and access authorisations.

The local transport of the vehicle by ferry and by motorail is permitted in compliance with the above-mentioned entry restrictions. Damage to the vehicle during the crossing will be covered according to the protection booked in the rental contract.

In case of offence against cross border and territorial restrictions all protections lose their validity. Only the protection from the liability insurance in accordance with the conditions of the international insurance card remains valid.

A fee is charged for permission to travel abroad in accordance with the above-mentioned territorial restrictions. This fee is in addition to the one-way fee in case of a one-way rental.

If the desired one-way rental is possible, respective charges may apply.

In the case of unannounced and unauthorised one-way rentals, we reserve the right to charge an additional fee.

Navigation systems and Android Auto / Apple Car Play are guaranteed to be available when booking.

A charge is levied for the additional driver, whose details are noted in the lease only if the additional driver presents a valid driver's license.

At some selected branches, customers can choose to rent an electronic toll device. The device allows you to pass through motorway toll booths in Italy without stopping in the lanes dedicated to electronic toll collection. The daily cost includes the rental of the device and the amount of the tolls. At the time of collection, the customer will be provided with all relevant information, which the customer is required to take note of. Incorrect use of the device, such as travelling in lanes reserved for electronic toll collection without having correctly activated the service or in the absence of the device, may result in the customer being charged for the toll costs not properly paid and requested by the motorway management company.

Baby seats, child seats and booster seats for children up to 12 years (61 to 150 cm) are guaranteed to be available if a booking is made.

If desired, the vehicle will be refuled according to currently available conditions after returning it to the station.

Alternatively at the time of rental you can buy a full tank of fuel at comparable pump prices and thus return the vehicle without filling it up. Please note that unused fuel will not be refunded.

Alternatively, you may book a tanking service for a fee and return the tank empty. The refueled liters will be charges at a price that is competitive with local fuel stations additionaly to the prior noted tanking service fee. Subject to availability, at selected stations only.

We record the charge level of electric vehicles both at handover and return. If the charge level of the electric vehicle at handover was above 80%, the renter is required to return the vehicle with a charge level of at least 80%. If the charge level of the vehicle at handover was below 80%, the renter is required to return the vehicle with a corresponding charge level. If the electric vehicle is returned with a lower charge level, a fee per kWh of missing battery capacity shall apply. The applicable rates are available at the Sixt stations.

Deliveries and collections are available for a fee at selected Sixt stations.

This service is available on request for an additional commitment fee outside opening times at selected locations.

Please note that between 15 November and 15 April winter tyres or snow chains/snow socks are legally required in many cities. An overview of the rules can be found at www.poliziadistato.it.

To meet these provisions, vehicles at stations in the regions where these provisions apply are equipped with snow chains/snow socks at the charge of an additional fee. In addition to the snow chains/snow socks, winter tires are also available as an option, subject to availability and a fee. Outside the regions/time periods where these provisions apply, winter tyres and/or snow chains/snow socks are provided for a fee subject to availability. In addition, ski racks can also be reserved at selected stations.

A premium location fee applies to rentals at airports, train stations, and selected premium city locations.

Out of opening hours service is available at selected stations. In this case, an additional charge applies for the provision of the service.

There will be a registration fee.

In the event that the renter is not a "consumer" as defined in Article 3(1)(c) of Legislative Decree 6.9.2005 no. 206 ("Consumer Code"), the following shall apply: For the processing of traffic and regulatory violations, possession violations and other violations connected with the use of the vehicle, Sixt charges a lump-sum expense fee in the amount of EUR 30,50.

Plans may change. As a flexible mobility partner, SIXT will, subject to availability, accommodate the client's needs. Any changes to the agreed rental arrangements must be communicated during the rental period by calling +39 029 475 797 9 or directly at one of our stations. Where possible, the rental agreement will be amended with the assistance of SIXT staff. In addition to any amounts resulting from the rental modification (for example, additional rental days and/or a different return location), a handling fee of EUR 5.00 shall apply to each request for a change to the return date, return time or return location. If the customer does not notify SIXT in advance of the intended changes to the rental, the following service charges shall apply:

If you return your vehicle earlier than agreed in the rental contract, we will charge the rental price according to the rental contract. If the vehicle is returned more than two days before the end of the agreed rental period, you will receive a partial discount for the unused rental days.

When booking at a prepaid rate, a refund shall not be issued for returned early. For further information please refer to the section Prepaid Tariff - Pay now.

If you return the vehicle later than the return date or time agreed in the rental agreement, you will be charged a usage fee for the additional rental period. The usage fee will be calculated on the basis of the agreed daily rate, provided that the booked rate remains available and applicable to the additional rental period. For delays of less than one rental day, the usage fee will be calculated on a pro rata basis according to the applicable daily rate. If your booking was made at a special rate (e.g. a weekend or hourly rate) and the conditions applicable to that rate are no longer met as a result of the rental extension or late return, the usage fee for the additional rental period will be calculated on the basis of the standard rate applicable at that time. This rate may be higher than the special rate originally booked. If the late return is attributable to you and the rental extension has not been agreed with SIXT in advance, in addition to the usage fee we will charge a flat service fee of EUR 29,28 for the Flexi Return Service. The flat service fee will not be charged if you prove that SIXT incurred no expense and/or damage as a result of the late return. If you prove that the expense and/or damage incurred by SIXT was substantially lower than the flat service fee, the fee will be reduced accordingly.

If you return the vehicle to a station other than that agreed in the rental contract, the Flexi Return location will incur a service fee of max. EUR 40.00 if we have not been informed of the changes to the rental contract in advance.

All rates are inclusive of VAT (if VAT incurs). For corporate customers with individual agreements alternative prices and regulations can apply. Likewise, different prices and terms and conditions may apply to partners with individual agreements when rebooking or cancelling prepaid tariffs.
