Payment Methods & Deposits - Sixt rent a car FAQs

Sixt rent a car offers a large selection of payment methods making it easy to pay the way you prefer for a car rental in the US. You will able to pay for your car rental with all major credit cards. Debit cards are also accepted at certain branches depening on the vehicle and whether your in- or out-of-state renter. If you book and pay for the car for in advance, you will need to make sure that the card that you paid with is present when you pick up the vehicle as well as the owner of the card.

  1. 1. What payment methods are accepted by Sixt rent a car in the US?

  • All major credit cards: American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, Discover, Visa, and Airplus.
  • Debit cards

Please check the information below about the two payment types.

  1. 2. Renting a car with a credit card

  • All major credit cards are accepted as a payment method with Sixt - these include the American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard, Discover, Visa and Airplus.
  • The name on the credit card needs to be the same as the primary driver of the rental car.
  • If you book and pay for the car for in advance you will need to make sure that the credit card that you paid with is present when you pick up the vehicle as well as the owner of the card.

  1. 3. Renting a car with a debit card

Debit cards may be accepted at select location’s on SIXT’s discretion if they have  two forms of government-issued identification, available funds, and one of the following criteria are met:

  • Out-of-state renters may use a debit card, but may not rent any premium, luxury, or extraordinary vehicles. The renter must present the return airline ticket/roundtrip flight itinerary upon pick-up.
  • In-state renters presents two recent, and original, utility bills that match the name and address on the driver’s license used. Photo copies, printouts, and digital images are not permitted, and these bills must be no more than three months old. Also, in-state renters may not rent with a debit card at an airport location and may only rent ECAR, CCAR, or ICAR categories.

  1. What vehicle categories can I rent with a debit card?

  1. In-state renters with a debit card may only rent MCAR, ECAR, CCAR, and ICAR.
  2. Out-of-state renters with a debit card can also rent SCAR, FCAR, CTAR, STAR, IFAR, SFAR, FFAR, MVAR, FVAR and cargo Vans.
  3. Additionally, debit card rentals are not allowed for long term rentals (defined as 28 days or longer).

  1. 4. What is NOT accepted as a form of payment?

  • Pre-paid cards
  • Visa Electron cards
  • Electronic use only cards
  • Maestro cards
  • Cheques
  • Cash

  1. 5. Can I book a vehicle and pay for it even if I will not be the person who will be collecting and driving it?

No, the credit card holder who is paying for the booking has to be the main driver, as this will be stated on the Rental Agreement. Please refer to Sixt Prepaid Terms and Conditions.

  1. 6. What if I want to cancel my reservation?

You can cancel your reservation either by logging onto ‘My Sixt’ or contacting our USA reservations team; reservations-usa@sixt.com

Deposits & Approvals

  1. 7. What deposit would I have to leave?

In general, credit card authorization of a minimum of $200 plus the amount due for the rental will be taken as an authorization for security purposes. The authorization will be higher for specialty vehicles. For debit cards a deposit of $200 plus the cost of the rental will be taken. These funds will not be available to you during the rental.

 

The rental location may also perform a credit check or may require additional qualifications in accordance to local policies to determine whether the renter qualifies for a rental of a luxury vehicle. The renter must meet the minimum criteria determined by the location to qualify.

 

Note: Depending on the banking institution the amount is not immediately debited but held on the   cardholder’s bank account until the final rental charge amount has been debited. When the vehicle is returned, the invoiced amount will be charged to the credit card provided, unless you (the renter) present another form of payment.

  1.  8. How long after my rental finishes will it take for my deposit/ approval to reach my account?

Please allow up to 10 business days for the funds to clear and become available in your account. 

  1. 9. What is the difference between an approval and a deposit?

An approval is an amount held on your credit card, and may be used for the deposit.  This amount will show as a pending amount on your card until the rental is completed. Once the rental is complete then the deposit will be released to your card.

Prepaid Tariff

  1. 10. Can I pay for my rental from Sixt in advance?

Yes, Sixt offers prepaid rates as well as pay-on-arrival (flexible) rates. Fees do apply upon cancellation and amendment of prepaid reservations. There is no cancellation fee for pay-upon-arrival rates. Also, the name on the card used to pay must match the name on the reservation. 

Company Credit Cards

  1. 11. Can I pay for a reservation using a company credit card?

In order to use a company card the name listed on the method of payment must match that of the primary renter listed on the reservation and rental agreement. Sixt also offers corporate accounts with direct billing. For more information please visit our corporate enrolment page.

Special & Luxury Cars

  1.  12. What do I need to provide for renting a luxury or special vehicle?

For luxury and special vehicles, payment must be made using a major credit card only. Also, a second credit card would have to be presented upon pickup.For luxury and special vehicles, payment must be made using a major credit card only. Important information:

Paying with payment methods above is only valid for the USA locations. If you are planning on renting a car abroad there might be other payment methods to take into account. If you would prefer to use a different type of payment method abroad please call our customer services for more information. Additionally regardless of your payment type, there will be a deposit for your rental. The amount of the deposit depends on the selected rental category by the renter; if you are renting a luxury vehicle the deposit will be greater than if you were renting an economy vehicle.
