Once the home of ex-president Viktor Yanukovych, Mezhyhirya is now a tourist attraction that highlights an opulent lifestyle. The private estate included a huge house, extensive grounds, stables, golf course, fleets of exotic cars, and even a zoo. Elsewhere, a drive around the city will take in Maidan Square with its nightly fountain show and often festive atmosphere while St. Sophia's Cathedral is the oldest church in Kiev with mosaics and frescoes dating back to the early 11th century. At the outdoor Mid-Dnipro Museum of Folk Architecture and Life, around 70 traditional wooden buildings have been rebuilt. Highlights of a visit are the small Space Museum housed in a wooden village church, the childhood home of writer Sholem Aleichem, and a Soviet-style Bread Museum. The region of Chernihiv is home to several medieval churches that escaped the years of Soviet rule. It is also an area of elegant palaces and delightful parks, making it the perfect summer escape from the city.
