Traffic Information

It takes approximately 30 minutes to drive from Kyiv Zhuliany International Airport to the city center while the journey from Kyiv Boryspil International Airport is a few minutes longer. As most of the road signs are in the Cyrillic script having a GPS makes it easier to navigate the busy city streets. It is important to know that speed limits are strictly enforced in Ukraine. Away from the city center, you might encounter farm animals on the road.

Sixt Tips

As one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, Kiev dates to the 5th century, although the region has been settled for much longer. The city had reached its political and trading peak by the 13th century, at which point it was conquered by the Mongols before becoming part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. After further turbulent centuries, it was annexed by the Russian Empire in 1775, remaining under Russian and later Soviet rule until 1991. Since then it has been discovering its place on the stage of independent and important European cities. As you drive into Kiev from the airport, you cannot miss seeing Rodina Mat, a giant statue of a female warrior. Erected in 1981 as a monument to the USSR, it today houses the Great Patriotic War Museum at its base and viewing platforms at the top. If the sun is shining, take a drive across Parkovyi Bridge that spans the River Dnipro to Skvorechnik. This bohemian haven is a great place for a relaxed beachfront day with its vegetarian cafe and drop-in classes of meditation, yoga, and dream-catcher making.

At the outdoor Mid-Dnipro Museum of Folk Architecture and Life, around 70 traditional wooden buildings have been rebuilt. Highlights of a visit are the small Space Museum housed in a wooden village church, the childhood home of writer Sholem Aleichem, and a Soviet-style Bread Museum.
