Basel Airport is a short drive from the city center on the A35. The city streets are used by both cars and trams, with trams having priority. Roads are well-maintained but like any busy city, they become congested at peak times and can be confusing to newcomers. Having a GPS system with your rental vehicle makes city driving more relaxing. Parking is hard to find in the old city so we recommend parking further out and finishing your journey by tram. Away from the city center, there are plenty of reasonably priced 24-hour parking lots and garages.
SIXT Tips
Basel has been an important settlement since the days of the Roman Empire more than 2,000 years ago. Today it retains a medieval heart, a Romantic-style cathedral, and Renaissance city hall as well as some spectacular modern architecture. Start your visit with a drive around the town in your rental vehicle before strolling through the cobbled streets and alleys of Marktplatz, Münsterplatz, and Mittlere Brücke. Enjoy some people watching over coffee in a city square before doing some souvenir shopping.
