Tips for the Region

The Amalfi Coast remains one of the most popular destinations in all of Italy. Visitors can expect to enjoy its quaint colorful villages, ample outdoor activities, delicious local cuisine, and breathtaking landscapes. Its close proximity to the city of Naples and the ruins at Pompeii make for an easily accessible day trip outside of the crowded tourist thoroughfares. A road trip on the Amalfi Coast wouldn't be complete without plenty of beach time.

Important Cities

The charming city of Positano is one of the most visited cities in the Amalfi Coast and can be reached from Naples. Spend an afternoon strolling through the many artisanal shops, before heading to the beach for romantic sunset views. A stop at the Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunt, an old church from the 1920s that is host to the famous Madonna di Postiano icon is also recommended.

The heart of the Amalfi Coast region, Amalfi is best known for its energetic nightlife and easy connections to the nearby Italian islands. Snag a seat at the popular Bar Francese during aperitivo hour, or take off into the surrounding hills for a tour of the local wineries. The lemon groves surrounding the Amalfi region make for some of the most delicious limoncello in all of Italy. Many visitors base their stay in Amalfi as it offers the most amount of restaurants, bars, and hotel options.

Ravello is a small and peaceful beach town located just outside of Salerno, to the east of Positano and Amalfi. Ravello is most famous for its two impressive seaside estates, Villa Cimbrone and Villa Rufolo. The villas are located just off of the main square, which boasts an impressive Duomo Cathedral in its center. If visiting in the summer, you will be able to enjoy the Ravello Festival which showcases the talent of local musicians and artists. It's easy to reach Ravello from our train station pick up location in nearby Salerno.

Climate, Cuisine & Travel with Children

The Amalfi Coast experiences a mild-Mediterranean climate making it a perfect year-round tourist destination. The best time to visit is in the spring, when the flowers begin to bloom and the towns are less overrun with tourists. The summer months of June-July are some of the most popular, as tourists use the higher temperatures to take advantage of the Amalfi Coast's world-class Mediterranean beaches.

The cuisine of the Amalfi Coast is mainly focused around fresh seafood, and plenty of local fruits and vegetables. As with most cities in Italy, there are also many opportunities to sample the regional wine which is generally accompanied by an assorted plate of meats and cheeses. The nearby city of Naples is also known as being the birthplace of pizza, making the region ripe with opportunities for a delicious slice.

Traveling with Children

While the Amalfi landscape can be a bit extreme, the local Italian population is both friendly and inviting for those traveling with children. Pack a picnic and drive to the Ancient Greek temples at Paestum, or hop on the ferry for a day exploring the Italian islands of Ischia and Capri. For those looking for a bit of structured play, the Arte al Sole is a great kid-friendly workshop giving kids some hands on experience with local Italian cooking methods.
