Eisenach is best known for the Wartburg, which became a UNSECO World Heritage site in 1999. It was here where Martin Luther stayed under a false name for almost one year and translated the New Testament from Greek to German, which was first published in 1522. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe spent much time there writing, sketching and finding much inspiration. The Wartburg is also the center of many legends and lore.
