What to do in Helsinki in Winter 2019

As one of the coldest cities in Europe, it is well prepared for winter. Provided you have packed the right clothes, you will find plenty of activities to enjoy during the darker months. Winter is the ideal season for museums. The National Museum of Finland is housed in a beautiful building and takes you on a time tour of Finland from prehistory to the present day. In contrast, the Heureka Science Center is full of hands-on activities for the whole family as well as the Verne super-cinema. Escape the cold weather with a day spent at the Serena Water Amusement Park. This is the largest Nordic water park with heated indoor pools and lots of water slides. The beginning of January sees Lux Helsinki when large light installations appear around the city. In the weeks before Christmas, Aleksanterinkatu is lit up while an open-air Christmas market appears on Esplanadi. If you would like to take full advantage of the snow and ice, then snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice fishing, and ice skating can all be enjoyed in and around the city. Just a short drive from the city is Uusimaa with nearly 12 miles of downhill ski slopes.

Our Services

For the best prices, it is best to reserve in advance or prepay when you rent a car in Helsinki. This is straightforward online or by using our mobile app. Browse our fleet for compact city cars, rugged SUVs or top-of-the-line convertibles and sports cars. We can also offer you a minivan or passenger van that meets your business needs or party size. Winter packages with tires and snow chains are included with your reservation when their use is required by local regulations. Before confirming your choice, select any extras you require from our optional list. At our car rental in Helsinki branches the following add-ons are available:

  • Additional drivers
  • Child seats for babies and young children
  • GPS for stress-free navigation
  • Tire and windshield protection
  • Loss damage waiver
  • Roadside protection

Traffic Information

If you are collecting your vehicle from Helsinki Vantaa Airport, the city is just a 30-minute drive away on Route 45. As in any capital city, the roads can be congested and confusing to newcomers so we recommend adding a GPS to your booking. In residential areas, low speed limits are strictly enforced. Parking in the city is widely available but can be costly. Look out for Zone 3 parking choices for the lowest prices. Parking is generally free on Sundays.

Sixt Tips

The city was founded by King Gustavus Vasa of Sweden in the mid-16th century, starting life as both a strategic military station and a trading center. Growth was slow until the building of the huge sea-fortress of Suomenlinna in 1748. It became the capital of Finland in 1812 and is now the administrative, business, and educational heart of the country. While Helsinki itself is full of culture, attractions, and entertainment, any visit should include trips into the surrounding nature, as well as boat trips around the islands that dot the Baltic bays. Then, at the end of a day of sightseeing tuck into hearty meals based on locally sourced elk, bear, grouse, and reindeer as well as salmon and foraged fruits and herbs.

Sightseeing Destinations

One of the first things to do when you rent a car in Helsinki is to take a drive around the city and admire its architecture. Highlights are the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art and the Musiikkitalo Concert Hall, both dating from recent decades. A little older is the rock-carved church of Temppeliaukio dating from 1969 while the Romantic-style train station was completed in 1919. More ancient history is not forgotten with glimpses of the Byzantine-Russian, neo-Renaissance, and Neoclassical past of Helsinki. Escape the city to the untamed wilderness of the Nuuksio National Park for a range of activities that include hiking and boating. Porvoo, one of the oldest towns in Finland is the perfect day-trip destination, located about 40 minutes by car from the city. This medieval coastal town is full of charming wooden houses. And a pleasant drive north from Helsinki takes you to Hämeenlinna with its famous medieval castle and the beautiful Aulanko park.

    Distances to Hämeenlinna from our:

  • Airport branch: 58 miles, 57 minutes
  • Railway station branch: 63 miles, 1 hour 17 minutes
  • Hilton Kalastajatorp branch: 61.5 miles, 1 hour 10 minutes

Business Travel

Helsinki is one of the most important business destinations in Finland. We can offer the business traveler a passenger van or a minivan that is ideal for transporting conference and exhibition materials.
