The rich cultural heritage of Costa Rica is present in San Jose, just waiting to be explored. The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum, located on Calle 5, features an amazing array of historic indigenous gold art. The National Theater, on Second Ave., aside from its well attended performing arts programs, is architecturally gorgeous. It has been there since 1897 and is a breathtaking structure, inside and out. At the Parque Metropolitano de La Sabana is the Museo de Arte Costarricense, displaying Costa Rican art, past and present. A rental car is the ideal way to visit these places, as visitors can set their own pace. There are a number of parks in the San Jose area, offering beautiful places for hiking and enjoying nature, including the National Park and Volcan Poas. Camping areas are also a major attraction in this area. SUVs are the best car rental options for these types of excursions. San Jose also has a zoo in Barrio Amón and a gorgeous butterfly garden in Barrio Tournon. There's also a small amusement park, the Pueblo Antiguo. San Jose nightlife is an adventure all its own, with plenty of music and fun to be found. Culinary adventurers will be thrilled with the wide variety of cafes and restaurants.
