General Rental Information

Important Documents

The renter and all drivers must have a valid original driver's license which needs to be presented at time of the rental. All drivers with a non-US driver's license must produce a valid Passport or a valid government-issued ID card as a secondary form of ID at the time of pickup.

For driving the vehicle groups FVAR and PVAR German customers need to provide the class D1 driver's license. European Citizen are allowed to drive vehicles with up to 8 seats only.

Driver's license printed with non Roman Alphabet (Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Cyrillic etc) must be complemented by an international driver's license. For driver's licenses from countries not part of the international driver's license treaty, an official translation of the license must be presented with the original license.

Age Restrictions

Certain regulations apply related to minimum age and possession of driver's license which can be found during the booking process depending on the booked vehicle. The minimum age to rent a vehicle in most locations is 21 and the driver must have a valid driver's license for one year. For certain specialty and larger-sized vehicles the minimum age of 25 years of age applies.

An Underage Driver Fee will apply for drivers under 25 years.

American Disabilities Act

Sixt offers a range of possibilities to accommodate customers with disabilities to ensure that they enjoy the high standard of customer service that Sixt provides. Such accommodations, however, require advance notice. Should your reservation require any special accommodations please promptly contact Sixt at reservations-usa@sixt.com or +1 888 SIXT CAR (749 8227) and confirm availability of the accommodations you need.

Additional Requirements

Sixt reserves the right to decline a rental where the operation of a specific vehicle requires additional permitting, documentation, or other qualifications in addition to a valid driver's license. Sixt also reserves the right to decline a rental where the renter's driver's license restricts the operation of the requested rental vehicle. The following locations only serve airport customers: Atlanta Airport.

Payment Information

In General

We accept all major credit cards including American Express, Diners Club, Eurocard/MasterCard, Discover, Visa and Airplus. The renter must be the owner of the presented means of payment which must be presented at the start of the rental. A valid credit card must provide available credit .

Debit cards are not accepted for local renters* at airport locations. Debit cards with available funds may be accepted at select locations at Sixt's sole discretion with two forms of government-issued ID, and only if one of the following conditions are met:
(1) The renter presents a return airline ticket or roundtrip itinerary upon pick-up. OR
(2) A local renter* at a downtown location can present two recent and original utility bills which match the name and address on the Driver's License of the renter. Photocopies, printouts, digital images or overdue bills are not permitted. Local Renters* with a debit card may need additional documentation and can only rent Economy through Intermediate sedans. Non-local renters with a debit card cannot rent any Premium, Luxury, Extraordinary, Extended SUVs or Cargo Vans. Debit card rentals are not allowed for long term rentals (defined as 28 days or longer).

We do not accept any Prepaid Cards, Visa Electron Cards, Electronic Use Only Cards, Maestro Cards, checks or Cash .

The amount that will be authorized includes the rental price as well as all additional charges and extras.

In general, an authorization of a minimum of $200 plus the amount due for the rental will be taken as an authorization against the Credit Card for security purposes. The authorization will be higher for specialty vehicles.
For Debit Cards a deposit of $200 plus the cost of the rental will be taken as a deposit from the Debit Card. These funds will not be available to you during the rental.

The rental location may also perform a credit check or require additional qualifications in accordance with local policy to determine the whether the renter qualifies for a rental on a higher-end vehicle. The customer must meet the minimum criteria as determined by that location to qualify for a rental.

Prepaid Reservation Policies - Pay now

By booking a prepaid rate, the payment will be charged before the start of rental with the estimated total amount of the rental (rental charge plus any other agreed charges and taxes for the full agreed rental period). The driver and confirmed method of payment shall be finalized at the time of reservation and cannot be changed.The confirmed method of payment has to be valid and available for presentation at the time of pick up and is subject to the conditions of payment above. All extra costs that occur during the car rental will be charged to this payment method. A refund shall not be issued for non-collection, vehicle being collected late or returned early.

A prepaid booking can be changed up to one hour before the start of the rental (depending on availability). An alteration fee of $28 plus tax applies. Any payment already made towards the rental will not be refunded; nor shall any differential amount be refunded if this alteration leads to a lesser rental cost. Any changes made to a prepaid reservation may impact the rental rate.

A prepaid booking can be cancelled before the start of the rental. In the event of a cancellation, any refund of the payment made towards the rental is subject to a cancellation fee. For reservations with a rental period lasting no more than three days, the total prepaid amount is non-refundable. For reservations with a rental period lasting more than three days: The first three days are non-refundable, the remaining days will be refunded.

In the event that the booked vehicle is not collected or not collected at the agreed time, the rental charge already paid shall be withheld in full.

Protection Conditions

Supplemental Liability Insurance

Liability coverage is limited to the minimum financial responsibility required by state law.

If purchased, Supplemental Liability Insurance (SLI) protects the renter against claims made by a third party for bodily injury and/or property damages sustained as a result of an accident while the renter is operating a rental vehicle.

This coverage supplies the renter with third-party liability protection up to a limit of USD 1,000,000 per accident.

SLI does not cover all situations that may arise while operating a rental vehicle. SLI does not cover all risks. There may be exclusions for unauthorized or intoxicated drivers, no first party uninsured motorist coverage, no coverage for certain passengers in the vehicle, and other exclusions.

Partial Damage Waiver

The Partial Damage Waiver removes the renter's responsibility for the first USD 500.00 of damage to or loss of the vehicle.
The customer will be held liable for any damage or loss exceeding the amount of USD 500.00.

Loss Damage Waiver

The Loss Damage Waiver reduces the renter's responsibility to a part of the vehicle in the event of damage or loss of the rental vehicle.

If Loss Damage Waiver (incl. Theft Protection) is accepted, the renter is responsible for the following deductibles:
USD 0.00 for any vehicle rented from the car category.

If Loss Damage Waiver (incl. Theft Protection) is not accepted the renter will be held liable for the full value of the vehicle.

Personal Accident Protection

Personal Accident Protection - covers bodily injury to occupants of the rental vehicle.

Personal Accident Protection does not cover all risks. There may be exclusions.

Extended Roadside Protection (BC)

Sixt will provide any renter who has purchased the optional Extended Roadside Protection coverage with 24/7 breakdown assistance (where available) without any additional charge. It protects the renter at home and abroad against high service and repair costs for the following incidents:

1) Key lockout service: If a renter experiences locking of the keys or key fob inside the vehicle during their rental period, Sixt will cover the cost of a lockout service, by either the vehicle manufacturer or a 3rd party service provider, cost of delivering a new vehicle or towing of the vehicle to the nearest Sixt location.

2) Lost key or key fob: If a renter experiences a lost or misplaced key or key fob during their rental period, Sixt will cover the cost of replacing the key or key fob, cost of delivering a new set of keys (if available), towing of the vehicle to the nearest Sixt location and for a replacement vehicle.

3) Flat tire service: If a renter experiences a flat tire during their rental period due to a puncture, Sixt will cover the cost of repairing or replacing the tire, cost of delivering a new vehicle, towing of the vehicle to the nearest Sixt location. Damages caused by collision will not be covered, please see Loss Damage Waiver.

4) Dead Battery: If a renter experiences a situation during their rental period, Sixt will cover the cost of jumpstart service, by either the vehicle manufacturer or a 3rd party service provider, cost of delivering a new vehicle or towing of the vehicle to the nearest Sixt location.

5) Towing: If a renter experiences a mechanical failure of the vehicle during their rental period, Sixt will cover the cost of towing, by either the vehicle manufacturer or a 3rd party service provider, cost of delivering a new vehicle or towing of the vehicle to the nearest Sixt location. Damages caused by collision will not be covered, please see Loss Damage Waiver.

6) Breakdown caused by empty fuel tank: If a renter experiences a breakdown due to running out of fuel, Sixt will cover the costs for breakdown assistance and fuel required to continue your trip.

When deciding whether to purchase Extended Roadside Protection, it is recommended renters check whether they have this coverage available through your personal auto insurance carrier or through a 3rd party carrier. The Extended Roadside Protection is not an insurance.

All services may only be ordered by a direct claim with Sixt 24-hour Roadside Protection. Sixt will determine the type and extent of service required to ensure the renter stays mobile. If any damage to the rental vehicle occurs which is not covered by Sixt within the scope of the Extended Roadside Protection, the renter is liable for such damage.

In general the rental vehicle may only be used in the state of pick-up and the surrounding geographical area (Region) as specified in the table below:

Renters using the rental vehicle in violation of the applicable territorial restrictions will be charged a fee of USD 0.50 for each mile the vehicle has been driven during the rental.

For one-way rentals across state lines, the geographical restrictions described in the table above are waived with a matching itinerary showing the same pickup and drop off locations. However, the Vehicle may only be used in the continental United States as well as British Columbia and Ontario, Canada.

Additional Restrictions for Local Renters*

Local renters* picking up a vehicle at locations servicing an airport or port may not use the rental vehicle outside the State of pick-up if they do not have a return airline ticket/boarding pass or round trip itinerary. Proof of insurance might be required.

Extras

One-way Rentals

Usually all one-way rentals within Sixt locations are allowed. Additional fees may apply.

In the case of unannounced and unauthorised one-way rentals, we reserve the right to charge an additional fee.

International one-way rentals are not allowed.

GPS

Navigation systems (portable or built-in) can definitely be added.

The Wi-Fi hotspot is only available at our Los Angeles airport branch. The In car Wi-Fi connection provides unlimited data usage for all devices.

Express Toll/ EZ Toll Pass

Some states have toll roads which may or may not accept cash. You have a choice on how you want to pay for tolls:

(1) Express Toll/ EZ Toll Pass Service:
For your convenience, you can purchase our optional Express Toll Service which offers unlimited use of automated toll lanes. Price and availability vary by state.

(2) Pay Per Use:
If you do not select our Express Toll/ EZ Toll Pass Service, and do not pay cash at a toll, you are automatically enrolled in our pay per use program. The cost for this service will be the cost of the toll plus a $5.00 administration fee per toll. You can avoid the administration fee and any other charges by paying the toll in cash, avoiding any cashless toll road or passage, or using your own electronic toll device.

Our optional E-ZPass Tag for Weehawken will be offered for a daily rental rate of $3.95, after the rental you will be charged for the toll transactions at the posted cash price.

Refueling Options

The Vehicle must be returned with at least the same amount of fuel as when rented. If desired, the vehicle will be refuled according to currently available conditions after returning it to the station. You have a choice on how you want to pay for fuel:
(1) You may purchase a whole tank of fuel before or at the time of rental at a price that is competitive with local fuel stations and return the tank empty. No refunds will be given for unused fuel.

Or
(2) You can fill the tank yourself prior to returning the Vehicle.
- If you drive a total of 75 miles or less you must provide a gas receipt at check in. If you do not, you will pay us a fueling convenience fee of $13.99, despite the indication of a full tank.

- If you drive a total of more than 75 miles and the Vehicle is returned with less fuel than when rented, you will pay us for the fuel used per gallon.

Delivery and Collection

Deliveries and collections are available at the local rental station subject to a fee.

Diamond Service

This service is only available at our Los Angeles airport and Fort Lauderdale airport location. This service will provide you with a VIP experience which includes: Chauffer pickup from the airport baggage claim, Diamond Lounge access, and a VIP parking space.

Other Charges and Taxes

Recovery Fees

The recovery fees reimburse Sixt for all or a portion of its expenses related to overhead costs. The types of Recovery Fees include: Hotel Concession Recovery Fee, Shuttle Recovery, Vehicle Upkeep Recovery, Facility Recovery, Counter Processing Recovery, and AVI Recovery Charge.
Your quoted online rate will show all applicable fees in detail on your reservation.

Customer Facility Charge

The Airport requires that all car rental companies servicing that airport to collect this fee. The money collected is used to pay for new car rental facilities.

Vehicle License Fee

This fee is allocated to recover the cost Sixt pays for vehicle registration, licensing and related fees applicable to a rental. This fee varies by location.

Energy Surcharge

Energy costs are a large portion of Sixt's operating expenses apart from the costs of refueling vehicles. To offset this significant cost, Sixt is imposing an Energy Surcharge. This charge is an estimate and is not intended to give a precise measure of Sixts actual energy costs incurred by each individual customer.

Tourism Surcharge

A Tourism surcharge applies to all rentals in Connecticut as required for all rental car companies by the State of Connecticut. This money is given to the state to fund activities related to tourism.

Rental Surcharge, County Surcharge, Hospitality Fee and Domestic Security Fee

Those fees can either be mandatory or permitted, depending on the applicable law. Those fees vary by location. More information about those fees can be provided at the rental counter.

Taxes

All prices are net prices. State, federal and local taxes apply to all rentals and charges.

*Local renters are defined as renters who pick up a rental vehicle in the state of their residence as identified by the address on their driver's license.

For corporate customers with individual agreements alternative prices and regulations can apply.
