For the sake of simplicity, it\u2019s best to assume you\u2019re coming from cities within the state of Florida, like <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sixt.com\/car-rental\/usa\/orlando\/\">Orlando<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sixt.com\/car-rental\/usa\/miami-fl\/\">Miami<\/a>,<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sixt.com\/car-rental\/usa\/fort-myers\/fort-myers-airport\/\"><strong>Fort Myers<\/strong><\/a>. And if you can, there&#8217;s no better way to enjoy the scenery and the sea breeze on the Overseas Highway than by making the drive in a convertible.<\/p>\n<h3>Miami to Key West<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Duration:<\/strong> 3 hours and 30 minutes<br \/>\n<strong>Distance:<\/strong> 166 miles<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Florida&#8217;s Turnpike<\/strong>, often called \u201cFlorida\u2019s Main Street,\u201d is a toll road in Florida that offers convenient routes and easy access to major highways throughout the state. If you\u2019re leaving from the Southeast Florida area, simply take the turnpike until it intersects with US-1 S\u00a0in <strong>Florida City<\/strong>. There\u2019s nothing like driving over the vibrant blue ocean, which can only be experienced on the <strong>Seven Mile Bridge<\/strong>, one of the longest bridges in the world.<\/p>\n<h3>Orlando to Key West<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Duration:<\/strong> 6 hours and 20 minutes<br \/>\n<strong>Distance:<\/strong> 400 miles<\/p>\n<p>For those traveling from the <strong>Central Florida area<\/strong> and wishing to go straight to Key West, taking Florida&#8217;s Turnpike is the fastest option. It\u2019s a direct route where you only pay one toll at the beginning. Please keep in mind that if you plan to stop in Miami for a couple of hours and exit the turnpike, you will need to pay another toll once you re-enter.<\/p>\n<iframe data-src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=1JigQ-FCwefVrfSlE2P4qttYkY_YMKlAk\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"auto\"  src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" data-load-mode=\"1\"><\/iframe>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">The drive should take about 7 hours, so it\u2019s only recommended if you plan to stay for at least 2 nights. The highway is very scenic and nearly empty of traffic. There are plenty of places to stop to see gators or take an air-boat ride. If you\u2019re feeling adventurous, try to incorporate places like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Captiva &amp; Sanibel<\/li>\n<li>Bonita<\/li>\n<li>Naples<\/li>\n<li>Marco Islands<\/li>\n<li>Everglade City<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This is absolutely the best way to visit the Everglades<strong>.<\/strong> This may take longer than on I-75, but you are likely to see some alligators and other wildlife in the canals that run alongside the road or on the banks. There is no wilderness in America quite like the Everglades, yet sadly, they are slowly disappearing since water reserves are gradually drying up due to construction.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Other Travel Options to Consider <\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In order to provide options for every budget and travel plan, here are other forms of transportation that might better fit your needs.<\/p>\n<h3>By Plane<\/h3>\n<p>If you prefer to forgo a road trip and don\u2019t mind splurging on-air travel, you&#8217;re in luck! There are many direct flights or connections to <strong>Key West International Airport<\/strong> available from many cities. Here are the important airport codes for those flying from far away that want to arrive as close to the key as possible:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>EYW<\/strong> \u2014 Key West International Airport<\/li>\n<li><strong>MTH<\/strong> \u2014 Florida Keys Marathon International Airport<\/li>\n<li><strong>FLL<\/strong> \u2014 Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International<\/li>\n<li><strong>MIA<\/strong> \u2014 Miami International Airport<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Travelers flying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sixt.com\/car-rental\/usa\/miami-fl\/miami-international-airport\/#\/\"><strong>Miami International Airport<\/strong><\/a> (MIA) or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sixt.com\/car-rental\/usa\/fort-lauderdale\/fort-lauderdale-airport\/\"><strong>Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport<\/strong><\/a> (FLL) can then reach the Keys by rental car.<\/p>\n<h3>By Bus<\/h3>\n<p>Fortunately for Europeans used to traveling by bus, <strong>Greyhound Lines<\/strong> makes scheduled stops along the route between Miami International Airport and the Florida Keys and Key West. Of course, keep in mind that you may have less opportunity to stop in scenic areas like <strong>Key Largo<\/strong>, <strong>Islamorada,<\/strong> or <strong>Marathon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>By Sea<\/h3>\n<p>If you\u2019re coming from Southwest Florida, you can also take the <strong>Key West Express<\/strong>, a company that operates high-speed passenger ferries from <strong>Ft. Myers Beach<\/strong> and <strong>Marco Island<\/strong>. The ferry ride takes approximately 3.5 hours, but this is ideal for those that want to make day trips. Once you arrive, you have the freedom to have an action-packed vacation filled with fishing or snorkeling excursions.
