Pay a small fee and you get a faster, more direct route, a more predictable arrival time and more time to enjoy the journey.

They’re especially worth knowing about in busy cities, and our guide to the US cities with the shortest wait times shows where planning ahead pays off. One thing to sort out before you go: each region has its own toll pass, so it pays to know which system covers your route.

What is a toll road?

A toll road is a road, bridge, tunnel or highway lane where drivers pay a fee each time they use it. How much you pay usually depends on the distance, your vehicle, the time of day and how you pay. On the East Coast, long toll highways are often called turnpikes.

Why do we pay tolls?

Big bridges, tunnels and high-capacity highways cost a lot to build and maintain. A toll puts that cost on the people who drive the route rather than on everyone. The money typically goes toward paying off construction and keeping the road in good shape.

Express lanes work slightly differently. Their price goes up as traffic builds, which keeps enough drivers out of the lane for it to keep moving. Many express lanes also give carpools a discount or free access, so it’s worth knowing the HOV and carpool lane rules where you’re driving. Whichever kind of toll you’re paying, you’re buying access to a quicker route.

How do toll roads work?

A US toll road will collect its fee in one of 3 ways:

At a booth. You stop at a plaza and pay a collector or a machine, usually with cash or a card. Many roads have now swapped booths for faster electronic tolling.

Through a transponder. A small electronic tag on your windshield talks to an antenna over the lane, and the toll comes out of a prepaid account. On most roads, you won’t even need to slow down.

From your license plate. No tag? A camera photographs your plate, and the toll authority mails a bill to whoever the car is registered to. Depending on the state, this is called toll-by-mail, pay-by-plate or video tolling.

More and more roads have dropped booths completely. This is called all-electronic or open road tolling. It relies on overhead gantries that read your tag or plate at highway speed.

Toll system types

System type

How it works

Good to know

Open (barrier)

You pay a set amount at plazas along the route

Easy to budget for

Closed (ticket)

The system records your entry point, and you pay by distance at the exit

Keep the ticket handy so you only pay for the distance you drive

All-electronic

Gantries read your tag or plate at full speed

No stopping needed, as you pay by tag or plate

Express or managed lanes

Priced lanes sit next to free ones, and the price moves with traffic

The free lanes are always an option

Toll bridges and tunnels

A fee per crossing, sometimes collected in one direction only

Common around big cities and waterways

How do toll roads charge you?

Distance is the obvious factor. On ticket-style highways, the farther you drive, the more you pay.

Your vehicle matters too. Most tolls are priced by the number of axles. A standard car pays the base rate, while a recreational vehicle (RV) or a car pulling a trailer can land in a pricier class. If you’re towing, check the rate table before you leave.

Then there’s timing. Some roads charge more during rush hour, and express lanes go further with dynamic pricing. On Bay Area express lanes in California, the price changes with traffic in real time and is posted on overhead signs before you enter.

The factor you have the most control over is how you pay. Transponder users nearly always get the lowest rate. That’s because there’s no invoice to look up, print and mail. At the Golden Gate Bridge, FasTrak drivers pay $1 less than drivers who pay by mailed invoice.

How to pay US tolls

Cash

Some plazas still take cash, so a few small bills and coins in the car are handy. Many roads are now cashless, so cash works best as a backup.

Toll-by-mail and pay-by-plate

You don’t have to set anything up: drive through, and the bill finds you. For the lowest rate, a transponder is the better pick, as some agencies add a processing fee to plate billing. Many agencies let you pay online soon after your trip.

Toll transponders

A transponder is tied to a prepaid account that refills from your card when the balance gets low. It gets you the lowest rate and, in many places, entry to lanes reserved for tag holders.

If you’re opening an E-ZPass account, do it with the agency whose roads you drive most. Some agencies offer discounts to frequent local customers.

Toll apps and rental toll programs

Most toll agencies have an app or online account for checking your balance, adding funds and seeing where you’ve been charged. If you’re renting a car, the rental company’s toll program covers tolls for the length of your rental, so you can skip setting up an account of your own.

What’s the most efficient way to pay tolls?

It depends on where you’re driving and how often.

If you’re…

The smartest option

Commuting on local toll roads

A transponder from your home-state agency

Road-tripping along the East Coast or through the Midwest

E-ZPass

Driving between Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado

Any tag from the Central US network, such as TxTag, EZ TAG or TollTag

Crossing both the Eastern and Central networks

SunPass PRO

Staying in California

FasTrak, or FasTrak Flex if you’ll carpool in Bay Area express lanes

Renting a car

SIXT’s toll service, or your own transponder

For most trips, one transponder that covers your whole route is all you need.

Major US toll pass systems

Most regions have their own toll pass, and plenty now work well outside their home state.

Toll pass

Accepted in

Where it works

E-ZPass

20 states across the East, Midwest and South

Every E-ZPass state

SunPass PRO

Florida

Florida, every E-ZPass state, plus Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and parts of Texas

FasTrak

California

All toll roads, bridges and express lanes in California

TxTag (interoperable with KTag, PikePass, EZ TAG and TollTag)

Texas

Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Colorado and most Florida toll roads

Peach Pass

Georgia

Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and the E-ZPass network

I-PASS

Illinois

Illinois, every E-ZPass state and Oklahoma turnpikes

PikePass

Oklahoma

Oklahoma, Kansas, Texas, Colorado, Florida and select E-ZPass roads in 5 states

E-ZPass has the biggest reach. One account covers you anywhere E-ZPass is accepted, from Maine down to Florida and as far west as Minnesota.

FasTrak is California’s pass, and a single account pays tolls anywhere in the state. Bay Area express lanes require a FasTrak tag. A standard tag works for solo drivers, while carpoolers will want FasTrak Flex, which has a switch for setting how many people are in the car and unlocks free or half-price trips.

TxTag is operated by the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). EZ TAG is a separate product run by the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA). Both tags are interoperable across the Central US network, along with KTag, TollTag and PikePass, so either one works across Texas and into Kansas and Oklahoma.

How many states have toll roads?

According to the Federal Highway Administration’s (FHWA) latest Toll Facilities in the United States report, 35 states have at least one toll road, bridge or tunnel.

A few of these are edge cases:

Vermont, where the toll roads are private drives up mountain summits.

Nevada, where the only listed toll is a scenic road through Valley of Fire State Park.

Iowa, Kentucky and Oregon, whose tolls are on bridges shared with a neighboring state.

Nebraska isn’t on the FHWA list, but it does have 2 small local toll bridges over the Missouri River. Missouri’s only toll bridge became free to cross in 2024. For the rules in every state, see our state-by-state guide to US toll roads.

States with toll roads

E-ZPass network (20 states): Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia and West Virginia.

Central US network: Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

West Coast and beyond: Alaska, California, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

Other toll states: Alabama, Iowa, Louisiana, South Carolina and Vermont.

Florida has the most toll roads of any state, adding up to 734 miles.

Toll-free states

These 14 states have no toll roads, bridges or tunnels on their public highways, according to the FHWA: Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Hawaii, Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Washington, DC is toll-free too.

Do toll roads really save time?

Usually, yes. And beyond the minutes saved, the real win is how predictable the trip becomes. We call this the reliability dividend.

At rush hour, the same stretch of free highway can take 30 minutes one day and an hour the next. Priced lanes are managed to keep traffic moving, so drivers who pay get a fast trip and a much more dependable arrival time. If you have a dinner reservation or a meeting to make, that certainty is often worth more than the minutes saved.

Toll roads tend to earn their fee in these situations:

at peak times,

in cities you don’t know well,

when you’re working to a schedule,

on long interstate drives where the turnpike is the direct route.

Late at night, or when the free road is just as direct, the free route can be a great choice too. Your navigation app can show you both routes, so check before you commit. Here’s our Toll-Ready Checklist.

Map your route and its toll networks. Note which states you’ll pass through, and whether they use E-ZPass, the Central network or FasTrak.

Choose the route that suits you best. Navigation apps can show routes with and without tolls, so compare arrival times before you choose.

Pick the pass that covers the most ground. For trips across more than one network, look at SunPass PRO.

Keep just one active transponder in the vehicle.

Add funds to your account before you leave, so every toll is charged at the lowest rate.

Check your vehicle class if you’re towing a trailer or driving an RV.

Sort out your rental toll option at pickup, before you drive off.

Driving a rental car on toll roads

SIXT offers toll service options at branches across the USA. What’s available, and what it costs, depends on the state you’re renting in.

You can also use your own transponder for the whole rental. If you’re picking up in a Northeast state, keep the SIXT transponder box in the car closed so only your tag gets read. No personal transponder? Simply choose a SIXT toll service option at pickup, or use cash lanes where they’re available.

Any tolls are charged to the card on file once your rental closes. For the specifics, read how tolls work with your SIXT rental, or look up the toll rules for each state on your route.
