Best places to visit in Nicaragua

  • Masaya Volcano: The largest volcano in Nicaragua is about 30 minutes south of Managua, Nicaragua’s capital. The volcano is protected in the country’s largest national park. You will be allowed to go up to the edge of the active volcano and stare down its fiery depths. There’s also a museum on-site and a beautiful picnic area. It’s a must-visit if you’re in Nicaragua. 
  • Lake Nicaragua: This is Central America’s largest lake and one of the most fascinating in the world. Lake Nicaragua is home to several small islets and larger islands, all of which you can visit. The lake also has two volcanoes at its center and is the only freshwater lake known to have marine life, including sharks. 
  • San Juan del Sur: On the Emerald Coast, close to the border with Costa Rica, sits this vibrant town with excellent surfing beaches. The colorful beach town has lots of beautiful murals on the streets, and the Christ of Mercy statue on the hill overlooking the city is an excellent spot for panoramic views of the city below. San Juan del Sur is also home to the popular beach Playa Maderas.

Summer in Nicaragua is from December to April, and the weather is usually hot and dry. It is the best time for outdoor activities, such as hiking, swimming, surfing and mountain biking.
