What to Do in Vilnius in Winter 2019

With its frozen landscape, Vilnius and the countryside around it become particularly beautiful in the winter. Visiting in the colder months is the perfect opportunity for exploring some museums. The Tolerance Center showcases Litvak or Lithuanian Jewish art, culture, and history in the centuries leading up to World War II. Housed in the 16th-century Old Arsenal is the Museum of Applied Art with contemporary and historic artwork. Winter is the season for basketball, a very popular sport in Lithuania. Catch a home game of BC Rytas in the Lietuvos Rytas Arena. Liepkalnis offers snowboarding and skiing just a short drive from the city center and its elevated position offers spectacular city views. Carnival, or Ugavenes, is celebrated in late winter as residents look forward to spring. Masked parades, dances, and cultural events take place while traditional pancakes are served from street stalls. Renting an all-wheel-drive vehicle with winter tires is a good idea if visiting Vilnius in colder months.

Traffic Information

The drive from Vilnius Airport to the city center is a short journey of approximately 10 minutes and while the city is fairly easy to navigate we recommend adding a GPS to your booking. Try to avoid the afternoon rush hour period that runs from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. as traffic jams build up. Please note that vehicles are not permitted in certain parts of the Old Town. The city has a choice of pay-and-display parking lots.

Sixt Tips

People have lived in the region since the Mesolithic period, but Vilnius grew to prominence in the early 14th-century when Grand Duke Gediminas made it his capital. The city has always been multinational, with a population drawn from across the Baltic States. Also, it was, and is, an important center of Jewish culture. Start your visit by taking a drive in your rental vehicle. Look out for the landmark seated statue of Mindaugas. Mindaugas became the first king of Lithuania after he united various local tribes in the mid-13th century. Founded by Jesuits in 1579, Vilnius University is a sprawling, but attractive campus of historic buildings set around 13 courtyards. Another landmark is St. Michael the Archangel Church built in the early 17th-century by the Sapiega family. It is a rare Lithuanian example of late-Renaissance architecture.

Sightseeing Destinations

There is a lot to see in Vilnius. Take some time to explore the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania. The building is a modern restoration and the latest in a long line of fortified palaces on the site. Under its courtyard is a museum that takes you on a journey through two millennia of Lithuania's history. The Cathedral of St. Stanislav and St. Vladislav is a national symbol constructed on a site once dedicated to the Lithuanian thunder god. It is noted for its Baroque cupola, its crypt, and the colored frescoes. Best explored on foot, the Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with narrow alleys, hidden courtyards, and beautiful churches.Further afield, Trakai, with its tranquil lakeside beauty and two historic castles, is a pleasant day trip destination throughout the year. Hiking trails can be enjoyed in the warmer weather while the frozen lakes are extremely photogenic in the winter.
