Take a drive up into the hills in the north east of the island and see the atmospheric 15th century monastery of Toplou. Sitting preserved on a hill it still dominates the local area. Or take a drive to the Lassithi Plateau, and visit the Homo Sapiens Village. This is a fascinating, modern, theme park about man's triumphs and struggles with the world around him. Also, there are of course, any number of fabulous beaches and small private places that can only be reached by car, where you can idle away the day enjoying the sun. Try Plaka Beach, which is about 4 miles, or 7 km, from Elounda, just outside Agios Nikolaos. On your return, stop at Elounda.
