Those landing at Brussels Airport in Zeventem in the Flemish region of Belgium can collect their vehicle close to the terminal. It's then just a twenty minute drive to the city center. If arriving by train, Brussels South station is close to many central hotels. Some of the old town is pedestrianized but in general Brussels is easy to navigate, especially if you've added a GPS when booking.
In some districts, on street parking is reserved for residents and cardholders. However, with a wide range of park and pay facilities in central locations like Rogierplein, Asstraat and Bisschopsstraat, you'll have no trouble finding a spot. The European rule of the right applies in some central areas, but signs will alert you otherwise. Belgian roads are well maintained and motorways are floodlit after dark. Brussels is the capital of Belgium and is often referred to as the capital of the European Union as well. The city features a unique mix of old and new. Contemporary landmarks like the Atomium contrast with the magnificent city tower and the 300 year old buildings found in Grand Place or Grote Markt of the old city center. Be sure to see the famous Mannekin Pis statue, a symbol of the city that illustrates the fun loving nature of its inhabitants.
With your rental vehicle you can really explore some of the city's highlights. Take a ride past the Atomium at night when the 9 spheres are illuminated and check out the Grand Place light show. A visit to the Horta Museum, a UNESCO listed World Heritage Site, in the Rue Americaine is also recommended. A shining example of Belgian Art Nouveau, the museum is the former home of designer and architect Victor Horta.
Brussels can be very cold in the winter, with temperatures averaging in the 30s. Thankfully, many of the city highlights are its museums and events, and the architecture can be equally if not more beautiful all lit up. In mid-February, visitors can enjoy the Bright Brussels Festivals all over the city, which includes interactive exhibitions, displays and costumes dedicated to electric light. There are also several Jazz festivals in the month of January and at the beginning of March there is the annual Anima film festival celebrating new animation pieces. Brussels has many world-class museums to spend chilly days in, including The Royal Museums of Fine Art Brussels, Museum of Natural Sciences, and the Art and History Museum. Or you can schedule a tour of the European Parliament. Of course, sweets like hot chocolate and famous Belgian waffles are available year-round but taste better on a cold day. The sometimes-narrow streets are best traversed with a compact sedan, although be sure to ask about winter tire availability.
