The best way to experience the expansive and varied Australian landscape is with a set of wheels, but be sure to take note of the local road rules before you venture out.
-Drive on the left Aussies use right-hand drive vehicles and drive on the left side of the road. Pass vehicles using the right lane.
-Obey the speed limit Roads in cities are generally 31 mph (50 km/h) and highways are 62-68 mph (100-110 km/h). As always, avoid speeding: penalties are steep in Australia, and speed cameras are common.
-Parking Park on the left side of the road. Signs that display 2P or 3P indicate the permitted hourly duration you can park.
-T2 and T3 Lanes Traffic lanes marked T2 or T3 are transit lanes for high occupancy vehicles and indicate the number of passengers per car permitted in the lane.
-Gas Check your vehicle’s gas tank size and research available fueling stations before driving into remote areas. It can be wise to bring a can of gas if you are uncertain of available stations.
