Driving in South Carolina varies from other states so Sixt wants to make sure that you are aware of all the driving regulations before you start your road trip.

  • The Drink and driving limit of blood alcohol concentration is at or above 0.08.
  • The driver and every occupant of a motor vehicle is required to wear a seat belt.
  • While riding in a vehicle every child who is under 6 years of age is required to have a child passenger restraint fitted.
  • The driver of a vehicle overtaking another vehicle proceeding in the same direction shall pass to the left.
  • Every vehicle that is traveling on a street or highway within this State shall display lighted lamps and illuminating devices,  from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise, and at any other time when windshield wipers are in use as a result of rain, sleet, or snow.
  • When two vehicles approach or enter an intersection from different highways at approximately the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right.
  • The driver of a vehicle meeting or overtaking from either direction a school bus stopped on a highway or private road must stop before reaching the bus where there are in operation on the bus flashing red lights and the driver must not proceed until the bus resumes motion or the flashing red lights are no longer actuated. The driver of a vehicle must not overtake a school bus which has amber visual signals actuated.
  • When two vehicles approach or enter an intersection from different highways at approximately the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right.
  • The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left within an intersection or into an alley, private road or driveway shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle approaching from the opposite direction which is within the intersection or so close thereto as to constitute an immediate hazard.

Speed Limits

  • 70 mph on the interstate highway system and other freeways where official signs giving notice of this speed are posted.
  • 60 mph on multilane divided primary highways where official signs giving notice of this speed limit are posted.
  • 55 mph in other locations or on other sections of highways and unpaved roads are limited to the speed of forty miles an hour.
  • 30 mph is the maximum speed in an urban district. Urban district means the territory contiguous to and including any street which is built up with structures devoted to business, industry, or dwelling houses situated at intervals of less than one hundred feet for a distance of a quarter of a mile or more.
